Reason For Middlesbrough vs Swansea City Predictions

  • Both sides have drawn 14 games this season, more than they’ve won in the Championship.
  • Middlesbrough are the Championship’s lowest-scoring side.
  • Under 2.5 goals has landed in 74% of Boro’s home games.

Success for Woodgate?

Middlesbrough’s season was paused on something of a high, as they claimed a 1-0 win at Charlton to move two points clear of the drop. However, the pressure is huge given that the season could theoretically stop at any point. Teams can’t afford a weekend in the bottom three, so Woodgate needs to get Boro moving forward. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

Middlesbrough’s 1-0 win against Charlton ended a 10-match winless run in the Championship (D5 L5), they last won consecutively back on New Year’s Day. With Swansea losing just four of 18 trips, our predictions suggest they will come here and keeping things tight.

Struggling Sides

Middlesbrough have won just one of their last nine games against Swansea in all competitions (W1 D3 L5), a 3-0 win in the Premier League in December 2016. However, Swansea City are without a win in their last seven away league games (D4 L3), since a 1-0 win at Luton in December.

We see the pair playing out a draw here, with Swansea finishing up level in nine of their 18 away trips. Like the Swans, Boro have also drawn more games than they’ve won this season. Eight of their 19 here have finished level, including four 1-1 draws.

The Swans have been limited in front of goal this season, scoring just 1.2 goals per trip. They head here with the majority of their away matches finishing with under 2.5 goals scored (56%). Their three-month break is unlikely to have cured their attacking woes.

Goal Shy

Despite starting off well, Middlesbrough are now the Championship’s lowest-scoring side. They’ve converted only 7% of their chances at home and that came with a crowd roaring them on. With Swansea already light on goals themselves, we don’t think these two will come roaring back into action.

So far, 74% of Boro’s home games have seen fewer than three goals scored. They’ve not been converting their chances, while this is quite the trip for the Swans under the current circumstances. Given everything, we are going with under 2.5 goals as our first prediction. That points to a low scoring draw given their results so far, so we’re also backing this one to finish 1-1.
