Morecambe vs Grimsby Town Predictions

Although the sides may not be the most entertaining in the division, a relegation six pointer is an exciting prospect at any point of the campaign, even if it does come on the opening day of the season. That is exactly the proposition which awaits us this weekend, as two sides who are expected to struggle this term meet at the Globe Arena as Morecambe welcome Grimsby Town.

Ever since Morecambe’s heartbreaking defeat in the 2009/10 League Two playoff semifinal, it’s been downhill for The Shrimps. They finished 20th in the following campaign and ended just 4 points clear of the relegation zone, and there have been only occasional glimmers of hope since. Morecambe have finished in the bottom half of the table in eight of the last nine League Two seasons and have finished 18th or lower in five of the last six. The season before last saw them avoid the drop on goal difference, and they were only saved from a relegation last year because of the ineptitude of Notts County and Yeovil Town.

Whilst Grimsby Town may not have the same sort of figures to back up many peoples belief that they will struggle this season, they have not exactly been tipped for glory this season. The Mariners have struggled for goals over the past few years and although they have experience up top in Matthew Green and James Hanson, it remains to be seen if they are able to supply their strikers with the sort of quality service they required.

As we are entering into the season, there is little data to assess in order to come to a conclusion in this fixture but one area which is telling is the head to head record. Typically this match has seen little in the way of goals scored and given that neither side will likely be up to full sharpness, we cannot see this one bucking the trend. With this in mind, we think that backing there to be less than 2.5 goals scored represents the best opportunity for a decent return.
