New York Red Bulls vs Seattle Sounders Predictions

New York’s assault on the top of the Eastern Conference was slowed down at the weekend when they drew against Columbus Crew, though taking a point from a very tricky away fixture is rarely negative. Now back in front of their own fans, Jesse Marsch’s side will be looking to regain the winning thread. Having won three of their last five at home, including a convincing 4-0 win when last at this venue, the hosts should be feeling upbeat.

Unlike their hosts, Seattle did win last time out, beating a rather poor DC United by two goals to one on home soil, though their form prior to that victory was shocking. The team who reached last year’s MLS Cup Final are yet to get going this time around. Their overall form has been bad, but it has been their form on the road that has been particularly weak. Poor away form doesn’t exactly bode well ahead of a match against a team who’re no mugs on their own patch.

Given Seattle’s away-day woes, the hosts will know that this is a big opportunity for them to keep the pressure on the three teams ahead of them in the table. Jesse Marsch’s men have been performing well on their own patch of late, and after three clean sheets on the bounce at Red Bull Arena, they ought to fancy themselves against a Seattle side who’ve found goals hard to come by of late, especially on their travels.

Conceding goals on the road has most certainly been a problem for Seattle, who’ve shipped ten in six away matches this season, though their real problem lies at the other end of the pitch. Going forward, the Sounders have struggled immensely. Thursday’s visitors haven’t been offensively astute at home either, but it is on the road where Seattle, who’ve scored just four away goals during the current campaign, have really found life tough.

The visitors have scored just four goals on the road, while they’ve failed to find the net in 67% of their travelling matches this season. Such a record just won’t do, particularly since they’re facing a New York Red Bulls team who’ve been very sharp at the back when playing on their own patch.

Not only are Seattle struggling to score goals on their travels, but they’re also finding it hard to create chances and get shots off in general. Brian Schmetzer’s men managed zero shots on target in their last away match, while they were hardly any better when hitting the target just once when losing away at Portland prior to that. What’s more, the unconvincing and lacklustre visitors have managed a total of just 44 shots on target all season. Only a very poor DC United team have taken less.

In contrast, the hosts have thrived on home soil this season, winning 67% of their matches at Red Bull Arena, scoring 15 goals and conceding just three in the process. After thrashing their city rival by four goals to nil last time out and having kept three clean sheets on the spin at home, the hosts are backed to get the better of the struggling visitors in convincing fashion. ‘New York Red Bulls -1 Asian Handicap’ stands out.
