Newcastle vs Burnley Predictions

  • Newcastle are without a win in 15 competitive games this season.
  • Burnley have only lost one of their last eight in the Premier League.
  • Just one of Burnley’s five league defeats this season has come against a side in the bottom half of the table.

Newcastle’s misery continues

Newcastle United may have changed owners and managers so far this season but given their current form there is no guarantee that Eddie Howe and the Saudi Arabia Publish Investment Fund will be in charge of a Premier League club come next season.

The Magpies’ winless start to the season stretched to 14 games in midweek as they were held by fellow relegation candidates Norwich, leaving them rock-bottom of the Premier League and six points adrift of safety.

A home fixture against Burnley represents a crucial opportunity for Eddie Howe to get three points on the board before a ruthless run of games against Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in December.

Clarets on the rise

Burnley, like their hosts, sit in the bottom three heading into the weekend but unlike Newcastle they have actually managed to claim a victory this season.

Their 3-1 win over Brentford at the end of October marked the beginning of a four-match unbeaten streak, although their goalless draw with Wolves on Wednesday did make it three successive stalemates for Sean Dyche and company.

Back Burnley to get something at St James’

Despite not having a win to their name since May, Newcastle are being touted as the bookies’ favourites against Burnley and that leaves the door open for a dip into the double chance market.

Burnley, despite their bottom-three standing, have only lost five of their 14 league games this season and just one of those has come in the last eight games.

That defeat came at the Etihad, and just one of their five losses came against a team in the bottom half of the table so I’m backing the Clarets to get something from this game, although with 14 draws between them this season – half of them 1-1 stalemates – I’m also opting for a 1-1 correct score prediction.

Cornet to punish Magpies

Maxmel Cornet is worth considering in the anytime goalscorer market, too. Burnley’s summer signing has scored four goals in his last five league appearances for Burnley and has finally taken some of the goalscoring burden off Chris Wood’s shoulders, so he looks a solid price to punish Newcastle’s dismal defence.

Newcastle predicted lineup: Dubravka; Manquillo, Lascelles, Schar, Lewis; Fraser, Shelvey, Willock, Saint-Maximin; Wilson, Joelinton

Burnley predicted lineup: Pope; Roberts, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Brownhill, Westwood, McNeil; Cornet, Wood

  • Both teams have scored in four of Burnley’s last six Premier League away games
  • Newcastle have played in five 1-1 draws this term in the Premier League
