Reason For Nimes vs Rennes Predictions

  • Nîmes won their first league game since September at the weekend, beating Ligue 1’s second-best defence 2-0.
  • The hosts have conceded 24 goals in their last 10 matches.
  • The visitors have won just two of their last 11 away games and have recently slipped up against teams in the bottom four of the table, like Amiens (2-3) and Dijon (1-2).

Nîmes looking to go on a run following vital win

Bernard Blaquart’s Nîmes had gone four months without a win before they finally poked two past Reims on Saturday (2-0). It was a vital three points for the Crocodiles, lifting them three points clear of bottom-club Toulouse and they’ll be hoping the victory can set them on a run now.

Nîmes had scored just three goals in their previous eight league games and prior to the weekend had netted the least goals in Ligue 1. However, they were extremely impressive in this match as they put two past France’s second-best defence. It was the second-most chances  Reims had conceded in the league all season, even more than PSG had managed in September, so Nîmes should be rightly proud of their performance.

Despite this win, Nîmes will have to remain wary of their defence as Reims are one of the worst attacking sides in the league; they won’t have such luck when facing goal hungry Rennes. The Crocodiles had conceded 24 goals in the nine matches preceding their win over Reims so can’t consider themselves out of the jungle just yet.

Bouncebackability needed for Rennes

Rennes had a crucial match against second-placed Marseille at the weekend and could have made a real sign of intent for the season with a win. They controlled much of the match but were truly done by a Marseillaise smash-and-grab as the visitors scored a scrappy winner just before the end of play.

This was Rennes’ first defeat in the league since November but with this run including seven wins in all competitions, they’ll be eager to get back on track here. It might just be due to fatigue from the winter break but there is a worry now they’ve scored just one goal in their last three matches.

Julien Stéphan’s men also have to be wary due to this match coming away from home, where they have been considerably worse. They’ve won just two of their last 11 games on the road and have recently slipped up against Amiens (2-3) and Dijon (1-2). However, they have been rather consistent at the top end of the pitch when away from home with six goals in their last five on the road; it’s just the eight conceded in that time they really need to rectify.

A close match at the Costières?

Given Rennes’ poor away form and the great performance from Nîmes in midweek, we’re backing this one to finish level. There’s no doubt Rennes are the better side here but they have had their fair share of slip-ups on the road recently.

Given the hosts’ recent boost, we feel they could give Rennes a challenge here. The Crocodiles’ defence is too poor for us to expect them to win here but we’re backing them to get the draw in this one. With both sides’ defences in tatters recently, we’re backing this to finish 1-1.
