Peterborough vs Southend Predictions
- Peterborough are in 3rd position, having won their last five games.
- Southend are 22nd, having amassed just 16 points all season, but have won two of their last four games.
- Peterborough are the top scorers in the league with 60 goals in 31 matches.
- Southend have conceded 72 times this season, at least 15 more than any other League One side.
Can Peterborough’s promotion push continue?
Peterborough are in fantastic form, winning their last five matches and sitting just one point behind Wycombe in second place. This form has meant that automatic promotion has become the goal for Darren Ferguson’s side and victories over Ipswich as well as both sides above them in the league has really raised expectations at the ABAX Stadium.
Peterborough have averaged 1.93 goals per game this season but this total has risen dramatically over their last five matches with the team averaging 3.2 goals per game, whilst conceding just twice. They look every bit the promotion candidates and come into this game brimming with confidence.
Safety from relegation would be a miracle; Southend’s work starts here.
Southend fans have endured a terrible season, winning just three times since the opening day and they find themselves second bottom in the table, 12 points off safety. Whilst relegation looks almost certain at this point, there will be plenty of supporters around Roots Hall who will be hopeful the side can perform a minor miracle and remain in League One next season.
In attack, Southend haven’t been too bad, scoring only six less than second placed Wycombe over the course of the season. Their problems have been apparent in their own half with 72 goals conceded this year, an average of 2.48 goals per game. They’ve improved on this in recent weeks however, averaging just 1.4 goals conceded per game, a record they will be hoping to improve further as the season progresses.
Posh look heavy favourites but can Southend spring a surprise?
Southend don’t look likely to come away from Peterborough with anything other than a worse goal difference than when they kicked off. We can’t see anything other than a Peterborough win this Tuesday and we’re confident in backing them to be holding the lead at both half time and full time as Southend continue to struggle.
Peterborough will be looking for a big scoreline to try and push themselves to second place but we think there will be some resolve from the Southend defence as their situation becomes more dire. The likes of Ivan Toney and Mo Eisa should have too much talent for Southend to contend with ultimately and we think a 3-0 scoreline to Peterborough is the right selection.
