Key showdown for south coast rivals

Portsmouth host Southampton in the latest edition of the South Coast Derby on Sunday in a game where there is much more than local bragging rights at stake.

Saints picked up a 1-0 win over Sheffield United last time out and need to put together a strong run between now and the end of the season if they are to force their way into the play-off picture.

Portsmouth are perhaps the team in greater need of the points, however, as they battle the drop. Pompey sit just one point clear of danger and their road form has been poor – so they need to make the most of their remaining home games if they are to avoid a drop down to League One.

The standout bet is backing both teams to score as goals at both ends has been a regular occurrence in Southampton’s road games. Both teams have scored in 14 of their last 15 trips across all competitions, and in 13 of their 14 away league games.

Pompey have gone six games without a shut-out at home and they have scored themselves in five of those fixtures, so we should be in line for a more entertaining game than the goalless reverse fixture back in September.

A point wouldn’t be a great result for either side but there is a good chance these rivals cancel each other out. Saints have three draws in their last seven games and have only picked up three away wins all season in the league.

Portsmouth have three draws in their last six league games and all of those have been 1-1 stalemates, and another result by that scoreline seems a reasonable pick here.
