Atletico poised to continue dominance at Jose Zorrilla
Atletico Madrid can leapfrog arch-rivals Real and move into second place in La Liga when they face struggling Real Valladolid at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla on Saturday.
Diego Simeone’s side have been in scintillating form, winning their last six games in all competitions and they will arrive in Castile and León having just thrashed Sparta Prague 6-0 in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Valladolid find themselves in the relegation zone after a run of just one win in their last 13 La Liga outings.
Atletico have dominated this fixture in recent years, winning six of their last seven away matches against Valladolid. The hosts’ poor home form this season, with just one win from seven games at Jose Zorrilla, suggests Atletico are well-positioned to extend that impressive sequence.
Griezmann leading Atletico’s renewed title charge
Julian Alvarez has been in sparkling form for the Rojiblancos, with the Argentinian notching twice in Prague to take his tally this season to nine goals in all competitions. He has scored in three of Atletico’s last four away league matches and could be the man dangerman again on Saturday.
While Atletico’s attack has been firing on all cylinders, Valladolid have struggled defensively, conceding an average of 1.65 goals per game this season. Three of their last four home league games have been lost by the same scoreline – 2-1 – which is usually the sort of scoreline to expect from Atletico Madrid.
Tuesday’s win in Prague was a bit of an outlier because the Czech side’s goalkeeper had a nightmare, so a more routine road win is anticipated here.
