Reason For Reading vs Luton Predictions

Reading welcome Luton to Madejski Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as they look to win for the third time in four matches. By contrast, the visiting side will be hoping to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat.

There’s been a turnaround in fortunes at the Madejski of late. After going on a winless run that lasted nearly two months, the Royals have now gone three games without tasting defeat, two of which they’ve won. Moreover, Saturday’s hosts come into this fixture having won each of their last two at this venue, scoring three and conceding one in the process.

In terms of results, by winning three and losing four, Reading have been very up and down at home. But as they’ve now won two on the bounce, both of which have come since Mark Bowen took over as manager, they ought to be brimming with confidence. Under Bowen, Reading have delivered contrasting performances. First time out, when beating Preston at this venue, they offered plenty going forward at the same time as restricting their opponents. When drawing 2-2 at QPR, they once again created lots but also conceded plenty; last time out, despite winning 2-1 at this venue, they offered little going forward and gave plenty away, so much so they were somewhat fortunate to win.

Since stepping up from League One, playing away has been something Luton have struggled with. Saturday’s visitors come into this match having lost each of their last three on the road, while they’ve lost six out of eight overall on their travels this term.

Going forward, even away from home, Luton have often made their presence felt, scoring 11 in eight. But their attacking play has often been negated by the fact they’ve offered little resistance at the back. When teams have hosted the Hatters this term, they’ve tended to create lots of chances. Moreover, Luton have conceded an abundance of goals on their travels, keeping no clean sheets and shipping an average of 1.88 goals. No team in the Championship has conceded more shots on the road than Graeme Jones’ men this season.

In the betting, ‘Reading Win & Over 1.5 Goals’ catches the eye. In Mark Bowen’s first two matches as manager, the Royals looked useful going forward, while they also did a good job of creating more than their opponents. Consider this in combination with the fact Luton, who’ve conceded two or more in four of their last five travelling matches, have floundered defensively on their travels this term. With this in mind, the hosts start to look a good bet to notch twice en route to a third victory in four matches under the new manager.

‘Correct Score’ players are pointed towards a 2-1 win for the hosts, whose recent efforts suggest they can outscore Luton. Despite not being shy in terms of goals scored, Luton have simply given more away than they’ve created on the road.
