Sao Paulo vs Palmeiras Predictions
Sao Paulo haven’t been in the best of form in the Serie A lately. They have only won one of the last four league matches and succumbed to defeat on two of those occasions.
They did manage to beat Vasco in the Brazilian Cup on Thursday though, and that 3-0 victory should give them a bit of a confidence boost ahead of this major Brazilian derby.
Their poor form has seen their rivals overtake them in the league table, and Sao Paulo now sit in 5th position with 42 points from 27 games.
Palmeiras are in 4th place with a two point advantage over their opponents, and a win on Sunday could take them to within a point of 3rd place Gremio.
However, a loss would mean Sao Paulo leapfrog them, and that is something they will want to avoid at all costs.
Luckily for Palmeiras, they are coming into this match in a decent spell of form. They haven’t lost in four matches in all competitions and have won their last three Serie A fixtures.
Their draw against Internacional in the Brazilian Cup on Thursday put a bit of a dampener on their winning streak, but a fiery derby in Brazil should see both sets of players well up for the game.
The record between these two sides is relatively equal. Sao Paulo have picked up 94 wins compared to Palmeiras’ 84 victories. But Palmeiras have beaten Sao Paulo twice already in 2015 by scorelines of 4-0 and 3-0 and have only lost once in the last five encounters.
Sao Paulo have an excellent record against Palmeiras at home in recent years though. They haven’t lost to on home turf since 2001, and have won 12 of the 18 meetings since then.
Palmeiras have also lost seven of their 13 away games in the Serie A this season, with Sao Paulo winning eight of their 13 home matches. This all makes odds of 6/5 look really good value for a Sao Paulo win, especially since recent form tends to go out of the window in derby games.
