Scotland and Ukraine face off at Hampden

Scotland and Ukraine meet at Hampden Park on Wednesday as the two nations continue their bids to reach the World Cup in Qatar.

This clash was originally scheduled for April but was postponed due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The winner of World Cup 2022 play-off will go on to face Wales in the final, and whoever wins that game will secure a place in Group B in Qatar alongside England, Iran and the USA.

Given the situation in Ukraine, I would imagine most neutrals will be supporting the away side in this match-up but that will count for very little at Hampden Park on Wednesday.

Scotland managed just one win in their first four World Cup qualifiers but won their final six to finish in second spot in Group F, behind Denmark, and since then they have played out two friendly draws with quality opponents in the shape of Poland (2-2 at home) and Austria (1-1 away).

Ukraine finished in second place behind France in Group D and managed to come through qualification unbeaten – but they did draw six of their eight games.

The visitors haven’t played a competitive game since November but they did play three friendlies against European club teams in the space of seven days in May, claiming wins over Borussia Monchengladbach and Empoli before drawing with Croatia’s Rijeka to prepare for this clash.

Both teams to score stands out

Scotland have an excellent home record and have won three of their last four home games, while they have just one loss in their last 12 on home soil.

A home win does look tempting, but at a similar price both teams to score is the better option for our main bet. There have been goals at both ends in Scotland’s last two games and they have only failed to score in one of their last nine home assignments.

Ukraine have plenty of attacking quality within their ranks, such as Andriy Yarmolenko, Roman Yeremchuk and Viktor Tsyhankov, so they should be able to find a way through, and both teams to score has been a winning bet in nine of their last 10 games overall.

Home advantage may prove decisive

Ukraine should be motivated for this clash but Hampden Park has become a bit of a fortress for Steve Clarke’s side of late and that could well swing the tie in the Scots’ favour.

As such, a 2-1 win for the hosts looks a reasonable option as a correct score bet and an anytime goal from Lyndon Dykes also appeals. The 26-year-old had a disappointing end to the season with club side QPR as he finished the season with a 12-game goal drought and also spent a stint on the sidelines, but he did impress in World Cup qualifying with four goals in eight games and he could well be Scotland’s danger man on Wednesday.
