Reason For Sheffield United vs Fulham Predictions

  • Fulham have lost all four games by an aggregate scoreline of 11-3 this season.
  • Fulham have been trailing for 280 of the 360 minutes of Premier League football this term.
  • Fewer than three goals have been scored in 11 of Sheffield United’s last 14 Premier League home games.

Hosts showing signs of second season syndrome

Clear favourites for relegation in the 2019/20 season, Chris Wilder and his Sheffield United side shocked the Premier League as their progressive tactics and utter determination helped them to an excellent 9th place finish last season, but the wheels have started to come off.

The Blades ended last season with three consecutive defeats, and that torrid form has continued into the new campaign. Their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal before the international break made it four defeats from four, although that trip to the Emirates did see them score their first top flight goal of the season.

Sunday is their best chance yet of breaking this damaging cycle of defeats as they face a newly promoted Fulham side in just as much trouble as them. This, despite being just gameweek five, can be seen as a proper relegation six pointer.

Fulham looking out of their depth in top flight

The visiting Cottagers bounced straight back up from the Championship after their relegation in 2018/19, but so far there are very few signs to suggest they can avoid the drop this term.

They were beaten at Wolves prior to the international break to match Sheffield United’s record of four losses from four, although Fulham’s have been rather more convincing defeats than the hosts. They have shipped 11 goals in these four games and failed to score on three occasions, with their only goals coming in a 4-3 thriller at Leeds.

Even more shockingly, Fulham’s dreadful performances at the start of games mean they have been trailing for 280 of the 360 minutes of Premier League football so far this season and have conceded in the opening ten minutes in three of their four games.

Blades can edge Bramall Lane clash

Even with Fulham’s dreadful defensive record, we’re not expecting a high scoring game here. These sides have scored just four goals between them this season, but Sheffield United’s more established back line should help them eke out a win on Sunday.

They have been far more convincing than the Cottagers this season despite their defeats and they did show improvement at Arsenal last time out, so backing a Blades win looks good value. With only one goal scored this season though, a narrow 1-0 correct score prediction is our choice.

Sheffield United injuries and team news

John Egan is likely to miss out after needing to go into self isolation during the international break, while John Fleck is also unlikely to feature after picking up an injury with Scotland.

David McGoldrick and Oli Burke are also doubts, while Lys Mousset is definitely ruled out for the hosts. New signing Rhian Brewster is expected to make his Blades debut.

Fulham injuries and team news

The injured trio of Kenny Tete, Harrison Reed and Mario Lemina have all had a couple of weeks to recover and should be available to feature on Sunday, leaving Fulham’s injury list empty.

New signings Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Joachim Andersen and Tosin Adarabioyo could all start here.
