Slovakia too strong for promoted Moldova

Slovakia missed out on promotion via a play-off defeat in the last Nations League cycle and they begin their bid for League B status against promoted Moldova on Saturday.

The visitors topped their Group D group in the last Nations League but have failed to win any of their 15 games since, while Slovakia are in decent form with six wins in their last 10 games – and they are unbeaten in three.

The hosts should win comfortably but they may concede in the process. Moldova have only failed to score in two of their last nine games and Slovakia have conceded in four of their last five, so a consolation effort for the visitors could be on the cards.

There is a clear gulf in quality between these sides, who are separated by 114 places in the FIFA rankings, and Slovakia can still win convincingly even if they do concede. Vladimir Weiss sr’s side have scored exactly twice in each of their last three games but can go one better and a 3-1 win for the hosts seems a reasonable correct score prediction.

David Strelec has struggled for game time at Middlesbrough this season but that should ensure he comes into the international break fresh. The forward has two goals in his last three games for his country and can add to his 10 Slovakia goals against Moldova.
