Tip Reasoning

  • Liverpool are unbeaten in 16 games and have won 12 of those.
  • The Reds need to win to close the gap on Manchester City and go into the game on a high after lifting the FA Cup.
  • Southampton have only failed to score in one of their last 17 home games.
  • Liverpool have just one clean sheet in their last six away.
  • Luis Diaz has a two goals and one assist in his last four appearances.

Liverpool looking to close gap on City

Liverpool can move to within one point of league leaders Manchester City with a win at Southampton and they should be able to take all three points at St Mary’s.

City’s stalemate at West Ham on Sunday means Liverpool’s quadruple bid is very much still alive but they do have a few injury concerns ahead of Tuesday’s fixture. The visitors will probably be without Mohamed Salah after he was forced off in the FA Cup final win over Chelsea at the weekend, while Virgil van Dijk is also rated as a doubt to face his former club.

Liverpool may well come away with the victory they need to keep their title hopes alive but Saints won’t make it easy for them and a win for the Reds with both teams to score stands out in this Tuesday night Premier League fixture.

Hard to see Liverpool slipping up

Southampton are winless in four games, losing three of those, and have eight defeats in their last 11 going back further. Liverpool go into the game on a high after securing the FA Cup and are unbeaten in their last 16 games, winning 12 of those, so an away win looks to be on the cards.

However, for a bit more value backing Liverpool to win and both teams to score appeals here rather than the short price on a standard away victory. Southampton have only failed to score in one of their last 17 home games and Liverpool have just one clean sheet in their last six away, and if they are without Van Dijk they are clearly more vulnerable at the back. Saints have also saved their better performances of late for the big games – beating Arsenal and drawing with rivals Brighton during their poor run – so I feel they can at least make things interested by breaching the Reds’ backline.

Diaz can fill Salah void

Luis Diaz deserves a mention as a potential anytime goalscorer, particularly if Salah does miss out, as he has two goals and an assist in his last three games. The Colombian is averaging 2.9 shots-per-game in the Premier League with 1.1 of those on target, so at odds against he looks a good option ahead of Tuesday;s game at St Mary’s.

A 2-1 win for Jurgen Klopp’s men is the pick in the correct score market as I expect Southampton to be motivated for this game despite the fact they have little to play for, while each of Liverpool’s last four wins away from Anfield have been by one-goal margins.

Southampton predicted lineup: Forster; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud; Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, S. Armstrong; Broja, Adams

Liverpool predicted lineup: Alisson; Gomez, Matip, Konate, Tsimikas; Henderson, Keita, Jones; Jota, Firmino, Diaz
