Liverpool -1

Reason for tip

Liverpool have the joint-best record in the league across the last eight games, winning seven of them. Meanwhile, the Saints have lost each of their last six, while they’ve been beaten by two goals or more in half their home defeats.

Liverpool 5-1

Reason for tip

Liverpool have won 9-1 across their previous two visits to the bottom three and the Saints have conceded 16 times across their last six. Given that the hosts are departing the top flight following two humiliating 9-0 defeats, the final day should see Liverpool send them off with a heavy defeat.

Roberto Firmino To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Firmino has scored in two of his last three games and the forward is averaging a goal every 115 minutes in the league this term. The Brazilian is set to start ahead of his Anfield departure and he can sign off with a goal.

Southampton vs Liverpool Predictions

  • Southampton have conceded 16 goals across their last six matches
  • The visitors have won seven of their last eight and have a point to prove on the final day
  • The Saints have lost by two or more in half their home defeats
  • The Reds have scored nine goals across their other two visits to the current bottom three

Both sides have fallen short

Southampton and Liverpool wrap up their Premier League campaigns on a down note, with the pair both falling short of their preseason ambitions. The Saints finished bottom of the table and struggled to ever truly fight against relegation, while Liverpool were predicted to challenge for the title but their bid to finish fourth was ended with Manchester United’s midweek win.

The rebuilding job begins shortly for both sides, with Southampton closing in on Swansea manager Russell Martin to lead what is likely to be a long-term turnaround at St Mary’s. Meanwhile, Liverpool need a midfield rebuild, but with their top targets being priced out of their reach Jurgen Klopp suggested fans will need to be patient this summer.

Before that, the Reds are set for one last run with a side which has thrilled in recent seasons.

Firmino leads departing Reds

With nothing on the line for both sides, focus will turn to the players who are making their final appearance in this clash. Relegation is likely to bring huge turnover for the Saints, while Liverpool’s rebuild begins with four free agents departing this summer. Striker Roberto Firmino is the biggest loss of the bunch, with the Brazilian set to lead the line one final time.

Firmino hasn’t been getting a lot of minutes in the final stages of the campaign but with Liverpool’s top-four ambitions over there’s little reason to leave him out for the final clash of the campaign. Even in limited minutes, the striker has scored in two of his last four appearances, totalling just 38 minutes of game time. He’s scored a goal every 115 minutes on average in the league this term, so back him to make the most of his final start.

Comfortable win for visitors

It’s hard to have much hope for Southampton getting anything from their final game, having lost eight of their last nine. Their manager is on his way out the door and plenty of players are likely to follow. Having lost 25 games already this term, the final day is an unlikely time for them to show up.

Liverpool may be out of the top four running but Mohamed Salah’s comments suggest they’ll take the final game seriously. The Reds have won by two clear goals in four of their six away wins this term, while they have won 9-1 across their two visits to the sides in the bottom three.

The Saints have lost by at least two goals in half their home defeats, while they’ve conceded 16 goals across their last six league games. Liverpool have won seven of their last eight and their attacking threat combined with the Saints’ struggles could make this the final day’s high-scoring clash. Back the visitors to rack up the goals and claim a comfortable victory.
