Victory for Sporting last weekend saw them make a return to the top three in the Primeira Liga, while defeat for Chaves saw them slip into the relegation zone. The two clubs go head to head in the league on Sunday, where with the home advantage Sporting are expected to pick up all three points. The head to head record between the two clubs suggests Chaves’ best chance is a draw, but it’s more likely that Sporting will win.

Sporting trailed at the break when they visited the Estádio de São Miguel last weekend, with Zé Manuel’s thirty-second minute effort enough to see Santa Clara lead at the halfway point. A much improved second half performance certainly contributed to Sporting turning this game around, but they were given a helping hand by their hosts.

Firstly Santa Clara gave away a sixty-second minute penalty which Dutch striker Dost converted and then a minute later the hosts had full back Patrick sent-off. From this point on Sporting dominated the match with 61% of the overall possession, had far more corners, and shots on goal, and it wasn’t long before Argentina’s Acuña netted to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

Sporting held on to secure all three points, a victory the visitors certainly deserved on the balance of play, but the hosts will be kicking themselves for letting their opponents back into the match so easily in the second half. With five goals in the Primeira Liga this season it’s former Manchester United winger Nani that top scores for Sporting, with teammates Fernandes and Dost not too far behind on three league goals apiece.

Chaves’ top scorer this season is Ghazaryan on three goals, but the visitors will be concerned to only have two players in their squad that have scored more than once in the league after nine games, with Marcão Teixeira the other on two league goals.

Chaves went behind at home against Desportivo Aves to an eighteenth minute Baldé goal, and despite controlling the play, the hosts had nothing to show for their first half performance. An André Luis strike just three minutes after the restart brought Chaves back onto level terms and with the momentum behind them it looked like the hosts would go on to win the game.

However, Amilton restored the visitors one goal lead in the fifty-sixth minute and Chaves never really recovered from this setback and were certainly guilty of wasting their opportunities in the final third, with just two of their ten shots hitting the target. That defeat saw Chaves drop into the bottom three and the prospect of travelling to Lisbon to take on Sporting is not an enviable one for the visitors, who are bound to be low on confidence.

We’re confident that Sporting will win on Sunday and that over 2.5 goals will be scored in the process. Sporting have won their last three games against Chaves, and over 2.5 goals have been scored in five of the last six meetings between the two clubs. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in five of Sporting’s last six matches, as well as in three of Chaves’ last six matches. In terms of a final score, we’re backing the hosts to claim a comfortable 4-1 victory on Sunday.
