Reason For St Mirren vs Hearts Predictions

  • Hearts haven’t won a Premiership game outside of Edinburgh in over a year.
  • In away trips outside Edinburgh Hearts have scored 9 goals from 12 games.
  • St Mirren are the league’s lowest scorers, hitting just 0.8 goals per home game.
  • The hosts have seen under 2.5 goals in 64% of their home games, including each of the last 5.

Basement Battle

As we near the end of the Premiership campaign, this midweek encounter between the bottom two is vital to both sides. Hearts – currently in last place in the league – are on course for relegation to the Championship. Second-bottom St Mirren would get another chance in the relegation playoffs, which has worked out quite well for Premiership sides over the years.

With only three points between them, either side could be sent straight to the Championship. Their midweek meeting could go a long way to deciding who avoids that fate.

Capital Concern

Hearts are currently bottom after a poor campaign, one which has seen them struggle for victories. They have claimed only four wins in 29 matches this term, a pretty dismal return. Their 1-1 draw with an out of sorts Motherwell side was a missed opportunity to add to that, especially given that the Jambos were at home.

So far this term, each of Hearts’ four victories have come in Edinburgh. They’ve managed to win twice in 14 away trips, both at rivals Hibs. It’s now over a year since they last won a league game outside of the capital. They’ve also scored just 39% of their total goals this term away from home, scoring only 12 goals in 14 trips, with five of those coming in two clashes with Hibs.

Short on Goals

There’s little reason to have faith in Hearts going forward, while St Mirren aren’t a great threat either. The hosts are the league’s lowest-scoring side, having averaged just 0.8 goals per home game this season. They’ve scored in just over half of their home games, while they’ve hit just two goals in their last five outings here.

The hosts do have a solid defence, conceding just 0.9 goals per home game. That should be enough to keep out Hearts, who have failed to score in 57% of their games on the road – and in eight out of 12 games away from Edinburgh. The hosts have seen under 2.5 goals in 64% of their home games and in each of their last five here, so we’re backing a low scoring clash following their respective runs of form.

These two sides have seen plenty of draws between them – with eight for St Mirren and 11 for Hearts. Each of the last three Premiership games at this ground have finished level, as have three of the last four meetings between these two in Paisley. They drew 0-0 here earlier in the campaign, one of four goalless draws at home for St Mirren and one of three for the visitors. Given their low scoring form and winless runs of form, we are backing another goalless encounter.
