Borussia Dortmund to Win

Reason for tip

Borussia Dortmund ended last season as the Bundesliga’s most in-form side, taking 22 points from their final ten games – more than any other team. They went on to impress at the Club World Cup, only narrowly being beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, and they should have too much for St Pauli.

Borussia Dortmund 2-0

Reason for tip

Although clean sheets aren’t exactly Dortmund’s strong point, they can land a rare shut out at St Pauli. The hosts scored the fewest home goals of any Bundesliga side last term, netting just ten, and look set for a frustrating opener.

St Pauli vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions

  • St Pauli scored just ten goals in their 17 Bundesliga home games last term
  • Borussia Dortmund took more points (22) from their final ten matches than any other Bundesliga side
  • BVB did the double over St Pauli last season, winning 2-1 at home and 2-0 away

Dangerous Dortmund can open with a win

Having been sat in the bottom half at the half-way stage of last term, a fourth-place finish and a spot in the Champions League will be considered a successful campaign for Borussia Dortmund.

However, they are a side with loftier ambitions than that and their late-season flourish under Niko Kovac will have BVB fans expecting to be in the title race this time around.

Given Dortmund took more points (22) from their final ten games than any other side, scored 17 goals while winning each of their last five games and performed admirably at the Club World Cup, there is every chance they will be too.

St Pauli primed for another tough season

Momentum is high in the Dortmund camp and it should remain so after their Bundesliga curtain-raiser at St Pauli on Saturday, given their hosts were anything but spectacular at home last term.

St Pauli scored just ten goals – the fewest in the division – at home last season and eventually avoided the relegation playoff by only three points.

It could be another tough season for Saturday’s hosts, who ended the campaign with a five-match winless run, and they are unlikely to have enough to keep Serhou Guirassy, Jobe Bellingham and Julian Brandt quiet.
