Sunderland had been in the hunt for automatic promotion prior to a recent seven-game winless run, although last week’s 3-1 victory at Plymouth could well signal a return to form ahead of the playoffs.

Victory over Northampton on Sunday would certainly add to that belief and the Black Cats have only lost two of their last 11 games at the Stadium of Light despite their recent dip in form.

Lee Johnson has built his side on a strong defence, with only Hull and Blackpool having conceded fewer goals in League One this season than Sunderland’s total of 41.

Northampton’s relegation back to League Two was confirmed following last weekend’s home defeat to Blackpool, with a run of one win in six coming at exactly the wrong time.

The Cobblers’ away form has been one of the major reasons for their relegation, as they have not won any of their last 16 League One games on the road – a run that stretches back to November.
