Villarreal aiming to cement Champions League bid at La Ceramica
Villarreal are usually good for the points at home but may face more difficulties on Friday against a Real Sociedad side that have lost just two of their last 17 matches in all competitions.
The Yellow Submarines have rediscovered some rhythm at La Ceramica with three straight home wins and seven victories in their last nine on their own patch. They even left Anoeta with all three points back in November. But the picture is far less convincing when you consider the Basques’ recent upturn.
They have won nine of their 15 matches since Pellegrino Matarazzo was appointed in December with their two losses since that date both coming in Madrid to strong Real and Atletico lineups.
Basques top the Both teams to score standings
Trying to call the match winner feels unnecessary when the goals market offers far more clarity. Seven of Villarreal’s eight games since their Champions League exit have seen both teams score, and the Yellow Submarine have managed just one clean sheet in their last 17 outings. Defensive control simply isn’t part of their current identity.
Real Sociedad are just as reliable when it comes to trading goals. No La Liga side has produced more BTTS fixtures this season — 23 of 28 — and that trend has only strengthened, with 12 of their last 13 league matches seeing both teams find the net. Their recent meetings with Villarreal tell the same story: a 3-2 at Anoeta in November and a 2-2 draw on their last trip to La Cerámica.
Back both teams to score with a degree of confidence on Friday and, for a longer-odds bet, try Carlos Soler to score at anytime. The Real Sociedad midfielder has scored in two of his last three La Liga appearances and it’s also worth noting he scored in the reverse fixture in November — one of his side’s two goals in that 3-2 thriller.
