Reason For West Ham United vs Burnley Predictions

  • Burnley lost just one of their last nine Premier League matches.
  • Burnley won three of their last four games against West Ham.
  • West Ham won just two of their last 14 Premier League fixtures.
  • Burnley scored exactly one goal in four of their last five games.

West Ham show signs of life

After a dismal run of just one win from 11 Premier League assignments between early January and late June, West Ham finally showed some fighting spirit in the battle to beat the drop over the past week.

Following an equal parts thrilling and unexpected 3-2 triumph over Chelsea on July 1, West Ham picked up a useful point at a difficult venue in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle at St. James’ Park four days later – results that allowed the Irons to build what could prove a crucial four-point cushion between them and the dreaded drop zone.

West Ham had failed to score for three games in a row before their five-goal flurry against Chelsea and the Magpies, and David Moyes will hope that his players can carry their new found attacking edge into the season’s climactic period.

Burnley remain in good form

Burnley were left disappointed on Sunday when they relinquished a lead late on against Sheffield United at Turf Moor, though there were plenty of positives to take from another promising Clarets performance.

While they remain happy to fly under the radar, Burnley have actually been one of the Premier League’s form teams for an extended spell now.

The Clarets’ 5-0 hammering at Manchester City on June 26 remains the single anomalous blip in an otherwise unbeaten nine-match stretch – and with five matches left to contest, Burnley are eyeing a finish in the top seven.

Burnley’s recent achievements are made all the more impressive when you consider the injury problems Sean Dyche has had to contend with, and the long-term Clarets coach has certainly made the most of his limited resources in Lancashire.

Burnley value in the double chance market

It seems as though the bookmakers have chosen to ignore Burnley’s prolonged run of good form and performances this week, and several factors indicate that the Clarets look excellent value in the double chance market for Wednesday.

Burnley’s recent record against West Ham is superb, and their 3-0 win over the Irons in the reverse meeting between the clubs in November was their 3rd victory in four meetings with the Hammers since 2018.

The Clarets overall Premier League results since January have been excellent, though it’s also worth noting that their evisceration at the Etihad at the hands of a ruthless Man City side was their only defeat in five assignments on the road – a run that included three victories against Man Utd, Southampton and Crystal Palace.

With those elements considered, backing Burnley to avoid defeat again looks a smart play at the prices quoted, though our correct score prediction of 1-1 suggests West Ham can take a share of the spoils.

A notable amount of momentum would have been gained from the Irons results against Chelsea and Newcastle, though we shouldn’t expect a repeat of their three and two goal showings from those games against a Clarets rearguard that routinely give little away.

Burnley conceded one or fewer goals in five of their last six Premier League tussles, though their return of exactly one goal at the other end in four of their last five offered a glimpse of their often-meagre attacking capabilities.

Combining their well-knit defensive performances with their modest attacking output, a 1-1 draw looks a solid correct score forecast.

Key Battle: Michail Antonio vs James Tarkowski

With two goals in as many games, Michail Antonio has been thriving in his role at centre-forward for West Ham of late, and the versatile 30-year-old will be aiming to add to his tally on Wednesday.

Standing in his way will be the considerable presence of James Tarkowski, who enjoyed a goal-scoring display of his own for the Clarets in their 1-1 draw with Sheffield United.

Antonio missed West Ham’s 3-0 reverse at Burnley when the sides last met in November, while Tarkowski grabbed an assist in the same contest before the turn of the year.

Both players will carry excellent individual form into their head-to-head on Wednesday, and that should make for a fascinating duel.

West Ham United vs Burnley team news

Scottish midfielder Robert Snodgrass is still missing for West Ham, while attacking pair Sebastien Haller and Felipe Anderson are both doubtful.

Mark Noble, who came off the bench against Newcastle, is in line to start however, while goal-scoring hero Michail Antonio should continue at centre-forward for the Irons.

West Ham predicted line-up: Fabianski – Fredericks, Diop, Ogbona, Cresswell – Noble, Rice, Soucek – Bowen, Lanzini, Antonio

Ben Mee and Matthew Lowton are touch and go for Wednesday’s tussle, while Jack Cork, Ashley Barnes and Ben Gibson have all been ruled out.

Johann Gudmundsson, who came off the bench against Sheffield United, could feature from the start against West Ham, and that should allow Dwight McNeil to switch over to his more favoured left side.

Burnley predicted line-up: Pope – Bardsley, Long, Tarkowksi, Taylor – Gudmundsson, Westwood, Brownhill, McNeill – Rodriguez, Vydra
