Reason For Wigan vs Middlesbrough Predictions

  • Only one Championship side have scored less home goals than Wigan this campaign.
  • Middlesbrough are the seventh-lowest scorers away from home in the Championship this season.
  • Wigan are in the bottom six when it comes to shots at home, while they’re seventh from bottom for shots on target.
  • Less than three goals have been scored in 48% of Wigan’s Championship games this term, as well as in 35% of Middlesbrough’s.

Latics in trouble

Languishing in the drop zone, Wigan are in trouble; there’s no two ways about it. Paul Cook’s men did appear to be resisting when they won two on the bounce recently, though they went back to coming off second best last time out, losing 2-1 to Preston.

It’s not that the Latics are a side that regularly get battered, but they’re struggling to collect regular points. Their main issue is a lack of goals, even at home. Tuesday’s hosts have scored in six of their last seven at DW, but they’ve only scored more than once in one of those seven.

They’ve scored two or more on only three occasions at home this season. Therein lies the problem. Wigan are the second-lowest home scorers in the division.

Boro on the slide

Wigan aren’t the only ones having a tough time of it, however, as Middlesbrough are also struggling. Thanks to an excellent run of four straight wins around the turn of the year, Boro are some way off the bottom four, but they’re by no means in a good position in 18th.

Jonathon Woodgate’s men come into this fixture having won none of their last five. Not the easiest team to beat, Boro have lost only two of those five, while they’ve not lost by more than a single goal since early December. They too are scrappers, even if they’re not the most effective.

Don’t expect fireworks

Those hoping to see the goals flow at DW on Tuesday evening may be sorely disappointed. Both teams are likely to view this as a winnable game, but neither will want to lose it. In the betting, ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ stands out.

Wigan have not exactly made a habit of being involved in high-scoring games at home this term, with only 40% of their matches seeing more than two goals go in. Much of the same can be said for Middlesbrough, who’ve seen three or more goals scored in 47% of their travelling matches.

Add in that the pair have failed to score in a rather chunky 32% of their combined matches, alongside the fact both rank poorly in terms of shots and shots on target, and supporting a low-scoring match is hard to avoid. Both teams ranking in the bottom five for touches in the opposition box fuels the selection further – and correct score punters can try a 0-0 draw.
