Villefranche vs PSG Predictions

PSG faced a tough first fixture since losing Neymar to an ankle injury and his presence was missed in the 2-1 defeat in Lyon. Paris took the lead within seven minutes with Angel Di Maria getting on the scoresheet but Bruno Genesio’s side managed to claw themselves back into the game with Moussa Dembele equalising before Nabil Fekir slammed home from twelve yards to take home all three points.

PSG had gone almost five months without a domestic defeat this season but they have now suffered twice in the space of 25 days after bottom-club Guingamp dumped them out of the Coupe de la Ligue at the start of January. PSG are still odds on to win the league as they are ten points in the clear with two games in hand but could they really suffer without Neymar?

You have to remember that with or without the Brazilian, this was always going to be a tough game as Lyon have been on fire recently. Neymar would have obviously helped the situation but PSG have such a plethora of talent who will be able to fill in, such as Di Maria, Mbappe and Cavani but also younger players like Moussa Diaby and Christopher Nkunku who now have the opportunity to step up to the plate, and what better chance to do so than in a cup game.

Villefranche currently play in the third-tier of French football but have been struggling as they sit 13th in the 18 team league. Their main issue though hasn’t been too many losses, but rather too many draws. They have drawn 11 games, the most in the division, and are in deceptively good form on paper. They have only lost two of their last twelve matches but five of these ended in a draw which has really stagnated their league position, restricting them from going up the table.

They did manage to match 2nd placed Chambly (0-0) a few weeks ago which continued their solid defence which has kept three clean sheets in their last ten games. They will be up for an almighty task here though as they face PSG.

This recent defeat for the champions cannot paper over the fact that they are very often absolutely devastating in attack with Cavani and Mbappe sharing 34 league goals between them. Not too long ago they thrashed Ligue 1 Guingamp 9-0 just after they had been beaten by them and with PSG still hurting after the Lyon defeat, they should be raring to set the record straight here. Paris have scored 21 goals in their last five games and we think they’ll continue that with a heavy win in this one. Villefranche have shown a rather solid defence recently though so we don’t think it’ll be a cricket score but PSG should put a few past them in what we’re predicting will be a 3-0 win. We’re also going to back both teams not to score and over 2.5 goals as Villefranche have failed to score in three of their last seven games against much weaker opposition so we doubt they’ll convert against the Parisian giants.
