Like many Central and South American football leagues, the Costa Rica Primera Division is split into two tournaments – the Apertura and the Clausura. The Apertura phase begins in July and runs through to November, with the Clausura beginning in January and usually ending in late April, although that isn’t the case this season.
So, who actually plays in the Costa Rica Primera Division? The league consists of 12 teams, with a playoff competition at the end of both the Apertura and the Clausura consisting of the top four teams from that phase. The bottom placed side in the Aggregate table is relegated to the Liga de Ascenso. The teams competing in the 2019/20 season are:
Deportivo Saprissa, Alajuelense, Herediano, Jicaral, Guadalupe, Cartagines, San Carlos, Grecia, Santos de Guapiles, Perez Zeledon, Limon and UCR.
Current Primera Division Clausura leaders Deportivo Saprissa are the most successful side in Costa Rican football, winning the Primera Division on 34 occasions and finishing as runners up 15 times. Their last success was in the 2018 Clausura season.
2019 Apertura champions Herediano are the third most successful team with 28 titles and 21 runners up medals, while current Aggregate table leaders Alajuelense sit second with 29 titles and a huge 25 silver medals. However, Alajuelense last success came all the way back in 2013.
