Royal Ascot is one of the highlights of this summer of sport, with some high-profile races to enjoy over the next few days. Given that, we’re looking to cover all angles at the festival.
The first leg of our 642/1 big-race mega accumulator landed on Monday but you can still back the rest of our selections here, while we’ll also have our daily Royal Ascot tips. Below, you can find all of Graeme Rodway’s expert picks for Royal Ascot Day 2.
Don’t forget to check back throughout the festival for all the latest free bets and special offers.
2:30 – Queen Mary Stakes
Experts’ best bet: Yahsat (each-way)
A wide-open juvenile race with which to start and Yahsat might be capable of springing a surprise. She looked good when winning on quick ground at Pontefract in April and lost little in defeat when a clear second to stablemate Pillow Talk in the Marygate at York a month ago.
Shamardal’s progeny have a good record on Ascot’s straight track and her dam is by that sire.
3:05 – Queen’s Vase
Experts’ best bet: Nahanni
Boasts two of the best pieces of form in this race, including his latest seventh behind the superstar Desert Crown in the Derby at Epsom. This is a weaker race than that Group 1 event and Nahanni can cash in on a drop in class for top team Charlie Appleby and William Buick.
3:40 – Prince of Wales’s Stakes
Experts’ best bet: Bay Bridge
This typical Sir Michael Stoute improver is getting better with age and he was wildly impressive when bolting up in the Brigadier Gerard ar Sandown last time. There should be more to come from Bay Bridge as he gains more experience and he looks a class apart here.
4:20 – Duke of Cambridge Stakes
Experts’ best bet: Saffron Beach
Saffron Beach thrashed main rival Mother Earth by three lengths when landing the Sun Chariot at Newmarket last year and she is less exposed than that rival, so may still be improving. Her sire New Bay’s progeny have a good record on Ascot’s straight track and Saffron Beach can defy a 5lb Group 1 penalty.
5:00 – Royal Hunt Cup
Experts’ best bet: Dark Shift
Has won three times on Ascot’s straight course and put in his most impressive display yet when bolting up in a handicap at Nottingham three weeks ago. A 5lb penalty gets him in nicely at the bottom of the weights off 9st 1lb in this compressed handicap and he is open to further improvement.
5:35 – Windsor Castle Stakes
Experts’ best bet: Chateau
Andrew Balding won this race two years ago with Tactical and Chateau relished quick ground when keeping on strongly to land the Two Year Old Trophy at Beverley last month. That proved he is well suited by a stiff 5f on fast conditions and further progress is likely.
6:10 – Kensington Palace Stakes
Experts’ best bet: Improvised
Split two higher-rated three-year-olds when second on favourable terms in a Listed race at Musselburgh ten days ago and is due to go up 10lb in future. She is evidently well handicapped and the step up to 1m, a trip she is bred to relish, can bring further improvement.
