Statman Dave’s Euro 2020 winner prediction
Portugal at 8/1
My pick is Portugal! A Seleção have had great success on the back of Cristiano Ronaldo’s elite goal-scoring, but the team’s overall talent level has increased massively in recent years with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva coming to the boil. They have what it takes to defend the European Championship trophy they won five years ago in France.
They line up in a possession based 4-4-2 diamond that will naturally overload their opposition’s shape in midfield and the incredible individual talent available to them gives them any number of game-changers going forward.
Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the greatest player to ever feature in the European Championship and while he will lead the line it’s not like he’ll have to carry this side. Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix, Bernardo Silva and Andre Silva are all there and have the ability to win games by themselves.
Expect the responsibilities to be shared across the team and this new-look Portugal to go the distance.
Statman Dave’s Player of the Tournament prediction
N’Golo Kante at 20/1
N’Golo Kante’s stock is seemingly at an all-time high here and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that carry on through to the summer.
The French midfielder is finally getting the plaudits for his on-ball quality and progressive ball-carrying, while his defensive prowess has always been lauded.
He was the heartbeat of Chelsea’s midfield in a man-of-the-match performance in the Champions League Final and his performances for France have always been top-class.
No player made more interceptions than him in the 2018 World Cup and he’ll surely play a key role once again in this tournament as France look to build on their World Cup win three years ago.
