Chelsea have completed the signing of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, subject to passing a medical examination.

The 29-times capped Germany international has agreed to pen terms on a five-year deal with the Blues and becomes the club’s second signing summer of the summer after Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech.

Chelsea have agreed to pay the €50m (£45m) required to trigger the release clause in Werner’s contract with RB Leipzig, and the 24-year-old is set to earn more than €10m (£9m) per season with the Premier League giants.

Ahead of his move to West London, Werner told Chelsea’s official website:  “I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club.

“I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart.

“I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.”

One of the most coveted young strikers in Europe, Werner combines searing line-breaking pace with clever movement and link-up play, though his clinical finishing is his most impressive trait.

Werner is currently enjoying the most prolific season of his career to date, having already plundered 32 goals and registered 13 assists in 43 appearances in all competitions for Die Roten Bullen.

After adding to his tally for the campaign against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday evening, he has two further Bundesliga fixtures this season to improve on those numbers before finalising his move to England next month.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia also expressed her delight over her club’s capture of Werner, who had widely been expected to join Premier League rivals Liverpool.

“We are very excited that Timo Werner has chosen to join Chelsea,” Granovskaia told the club’s website.

“He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven.

“We can’t wait to have Timo on board, but until then we wish him and RB Leipzig all the best for the rest of this season.”
