AC Milan vs Roma Predictions
- Both teams have scored in six of the last nine games played by AC Milan.
- Roma, meanwhile, have seen both teams net in five of their last seven.
- Only Napoli and Inter Milan have created more expected goals in Serie A than Roma this season – Milan are fourth in that list.
- Milan have hit multiple goals in seven of their last nine league games.
Scudetto door opens for Rossoneri
Napoli’s defeat to Inter Milan on Wednesday may have opened the title race up to a plethora of teams in Serie A – and holders Milan are certainly among them. The Rossoneri are five points behind Napoli after marking their own return to action after the World Cup with a 2-1 win at Salernitana, their seventh victory in their last nine league games. Sunday’s clash with Roma, however, may prove a tricky affair, with the Giallorossi capable of springing a surprise.
Milan were deserved winners last time out, and looked set to record a dominant success when they went 2-0 up within 15 minutes in Salerno. No team created more expected goals (2.7 xG) than Milan on matchday 16 in Serie A, which is in keeping with their strong attacking form – Stefano Pioli’s men have hit multiple goals in seven of their last nine league games, led by their inspired forward Rafael Leao. However, both teams have netted in six of their last nine, perhaps showing their defensive vulnerability.
Roma, meanwhile, edged past Bologna 1-0 on their return to league action, a result which keeps them three points off the top four and 11 off the summit. Jose Mourinho’s men have only hit the net 19 times this campaign – just the 10th best tally in Serie A – but that is not for lack of trying as only Napoli (30.5) and Inter (29) have bettered their tally of 28.3 xG this term. Having welcomed top goalscorer Paolo Dybala back this week, Roma will carry a threat.
End-to-end affair possible at San Siro
With Milan showcasing their attacking talents on a regular basis and Roma always likely to threaten – particularly when allowed to play on the break – backing both teams to net appears a solid play for Sunday’s headline fixture. Five of Roma’s last seven matches have contained goals at both ends.
However, Milan have won seven of their eight league games at San Siro this term, including crucial victories over Inter and Juventus, so Pioli’s men may be worth backing for a 2-1 success.
Leao, meanwhile, hit the ground running on his return from the World Cup and has seven goals – none of them penalties – in Serie A this campaign. He, as always, represents a fine anytime scorer play.
