- AC Milan won 2-1 at Roma earlier this season, and have won six of their nine league games at San Siro.
- Jose Mourinho’s Roma have lost five of their nine home games this term.
- The visitors have lost three of their five matches against the sides currently above them in Serie A.
Replenished Rossoneri to impress?
Serie A’s winter break has benefited Stefano Pioli’s Milan more than most; having seen their title challenge falter in the face of a genuine injury crisis, the Rossoneri hope to return to something approaching full strength for Thursday’s clash, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ante Rebic and Rafeal Leao recovering well.
Milan earned a superb 2-1 win at Roma earlier this season, becoming the first of just two visiting teams to win at the Stadio Olimpico so far this campaign. Milan have also won six of their nine home matches this term, and Pioli will hope that his refreshed team can build upon that record in 2022.
Mourinho’s Roma, meanwhile, have endured some troubles on the road this season, losing on five of their nine away trips. Although their last away match saw them earn a fantastic 4-1 win at Atalanta, they were frustrated in a 1-1 draw with Sampdoria in 2021’s final fixture, and look more likely to battle Fiorentina and Lazio for sixth than to genuinely challenge those above them.
Milan to record a crucial win
Milan are unbeaten in their last four Serie A meetings with Roma, and will be looking to recover from their injury-affected home reverses to Liverpool and Napoli by starting 2022 with a San Siro victory.
With many of their key players returning to fitness, and Roma proving unreliable either on the road or against top opponents (Roma have managed one win and three losses in their five games against those currently above them), we’re backing Milan for a crucial win on Thursday.
Despite their poor away form, Roma do tend to score goals on the road, netting 18 in nine on their travels. A 2-1 home win, therefore, seems a decent correct score prediction.
