Reason For Arsenal vs Newcastle Predictions

  • Arsenal won just two of their last 17 Premier League fixtures.
  • The Gunners shared the spoils in each of their last four top-flight outings.
  • Arsenal are averaging just 1.2 goals per game under Mikel Arteta.
  • Newcastle drew three of their last four Premier League matches and are unbeaten in eight games in all competitions overall.

Arsenal’s season continues to drift

Ahead of their encounter at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, both Arsenal and Newcastle are languishing in mid-table limbo having collected 31 points each after 25 rounds of fixtures – a Premier League scenario few would have predicted last summer.

The Gunners have had to endure an overwhelmingly insipid campaign in 2019/20 so far, and despite swapping Unai Emery for Mikel Arteta in December, the team’s performances continue to be flat. Arsenal have won only three of their nine fixtures under Arteta’s watch, and while the Spaniard has found a formula to shore up the Gunners’ notoriously porous defence, the team’s attacking threat has noticeably regressed.

With Arteta calling the shots, Arsenal are now conceding just 0.88 goals per game, though their average of just 1.2 goals per 90 minutes at the other end over the same period has led to some pretty dull spectacles. With goals thin on the ground at either end of the pitch, Arsenal fans have watched their team draw four of their last five matches, and while the team’s defensive improvements are welcome, the Gunners look far too easy to frustrate at the sharp end.

Newcastle to frustrate Arsenal?

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle team are one of the Premier Leagues’s masters of frustration, and the game-spoiling weapons in the Magpies’ armoury should make them a tough opponent for Arsenal on Sunday. Newcastle take an eight-match unbeaten run with them to the capital this weekend, a sequence that includes a string of four Premier League fixtures without defeat for the club.

With Bruce’s five-man defence proving a nightmare to play against, Newcastle have conceded one or fewer goals in three of those four Premier League fixtures in games against Wolves, Chelsea and Norwich.

Newcastle’s performances against Wolves and Chelsea in particular showcased the Magpies’ ability to suck the life out of games, and against an Arsenal team are already struggling for fluency, we think Newcastle can put their unique skill set to good use again on Sunday.

Magpies to avoid defeat?

Arsenal had won only once in 10 Premier League fixtures before Arteta’s arrival, though their return of just one in seven since his appointment suggests the Spaniard is struggling to shake off the problems he inherited from his compatriot and predecessor. We think a tough-to-break-down and tactically robust Newcastle outfit are set up perfectly to avoid defeat against an Arsenal team that managed to pick up just two wins from their last 17 Premier League matches in total.

That in turn makes the Magpies great value in the double chance market for Sunday. Both Arsenal and Newcastle’s biggest strengths lie in the defensive parts of their tactical makeup at present, and that should be reflected in the final score on Sunday.

With goals certain to be at a premium and defenders expected to rule the roost at the Emirates Stadium, our correct score prediction forecasts a 1-1 draw. Both teams have averaged approximately one goal each per game over their last seven Premier League fixtures (Arsenal 1.2, Newcastle 0.85), and with little cutting edge on show, one goal apiece seems about the upper limit of their current respective attacking capabilities.
