Atletico Madrid to Win

Reason for tip

Atletico Madrid may have been beaten 3-1 on Tuesday but that came in an away game against the champions and current La Liga leaders, Barcelona. They enjoyed a seven-match winning streak prior to that defeat and should find things easier against Athletic Bilbao, who were woeful when being hammered 3-0 at home by Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Atletico Madrid 2-1

Reason for tip

While an Atletico Madrid win looks likely, Diego Simeone’s side have uncharacteristically kept only five clean sheets in their last 17 games. The return of Oihan Sancet massively boosts Athletic Bilbao’s firepower and they should have enough to net a consolation in a tight clash.

Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

  • Athletic Bilbao have lost five of their last eight games
  • Atletico Madrid have won just two of their nine away matches this season
  • Atleti had won seven straight games before Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat at Barcelona

Madrid might prove too strong for hosts

Both Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid fell to damaging defeats in the week but it is the latter who are likeliest to bounce back immediately on Saturday.

Atleti were beaten 3-1 by Barcelona on Tuesday and while they will feel disappointed given they took a 19th-minute lead, there is no shame in that scoreline.

However, Athletic Bilbao’s 3-0 home hammering at the hands of a Real Madrid side who were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Girona just three days prior is definitely a cause for concern, leaving them looking vulnerable for Saturday’s San Mames showdown.

Bilbao bound for another home defeat

Bilbao were woeful on Wednesday and, most worryingly, it is not a one off. Ernesto Valverde’s side may be a respectable eighth in the table but five losses in eight all-competition matches should have alarm bells ringing in the Basque Country.

Valverde’s men are 11 points worse off than Atletico and that gulf in class is sure to show at San Mames.

Atleti had enjoyed a seven-match winning streak prior to the defeat against the champions and can get back on track in Bilbao.
