Desperation to give Atleti edge

Bayern Munich may be in fantastic form coming into this one, but the fact that there’s little on the line for the Germans means we’re backing against them in our predictions.

Bayern are top on 12 points, beyond the reach of Atletico on five. Things are tighter for them in the Bundesliga, where they host title contenders Leipzig on Saturday, a clash which will be their focus this week.

Atletico need a win or they risk a return to the Europa League, so they’ll have to follow up the two home wins they produced against Bayern in 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Atletico Madrid have lost just one of their last 24 UEFA Champions League home matches (W18 D5) and they’ve won nine of their last 11 here.

It’s a year to the day of Atletico’s last home defeat in any competition (W15 D5) and we see the hosts getting the result they need.

However, the Spaniards have uncharacteristically kept one clean sheet in six in this competition so they’ll have to do this one the hard way. A home win and a 2-1 victory for Atleti are our predictions here.
