Bastia vs Angers Predictions

Bastia managed to secure their position in the French top flight last weekend when a goalless draw against Caen, along with 18th placed Reims’ defeat, sent Bastia eight points clear of the drop zone with just six points left to play for.

This takes a lot of the pressure of the hosts’ shoulders after three straight defeats, two of them being against relegation candidates, put their safety in doubt heading into the final few games.

They now sit in 14th position with 44 points. With a lot of luck they could move as high as 8th in the table before the end of the season, but that would take a tremendous amount of good fortune. Instead, they can realistically aim to finish as high as 11th.

Angers are the team that occupy the 8th spot in Ligue 1, which is an excellent accomplishment considering they only returned to Ligue 1 for the first time in over 20 years at the start of this season.

What’s even more incredible is the fact that they still have a faint chance of qualifying for the Europa League. They are six points adrift of 6th placed Lille, a position which will be granted a Europa League spot should Paris Saint Germain win the Coupe De France. They do require Lille and Rennes to slip up massively and them to win their remaining two matches, but stranger things have happened in football.

Angers lost against Marseille last weekend, ending a five match unbeaten streak which had seen them pick up 11 points from a possible 15. This run of form served to bring them out of their mid-season slump where they won just one of 11 in all competitions. They will be ruing that extended run of poor form, as if it had ended a few games earlier they would find themselves in a good position for continental qualification.

Angers have won two of their last three away games and haven’t lost any, and they’re playing against a Bastia side who have lost two of their last three home matches and only won one of their last five. The hosts don’t have anything left to play for really, whilst Angers will be desperate to keep their fading dream of Europe alive. This makes odds of 11/10 for an Angers Draw No Bet look good to me, and I’m also going for a 1-0 correct score prediction at 13/2.
