Dortmund the team in greater need

Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund meet in a heavyweight Bundesliga fixture on Sunday, but only one of these teams is in need of the points.

Bayer’s title defence is now over after Bayern Munich wrapped up the league crown with a few games to spare and they have secured second spot irrespective of what happens in their final two games.

In contrast, Dortmund have it all to play for as they sit in fifth spot but are just one point behind Freiburg in fourth.

BVB can still catch third placed Frankfurt and fourth placed Freiburg and as those two teams meet in the final round of fixtures there is a chance that two wins will be enough for them to break into the top four and secure a Champions League spot.

Dortmund come into Sunday’s game in fine form after four successive wins across all competitions, while they are unbeaten in six in the Bundesliga, with five wins and a draw against Bayern.

Leverkusen are unbeaten in five but they have drawn three of those games and they have a mixed record against BVB with just one win in the last five meetings (D2, L2).

The visitors are clearly the team in greater need and Niko Kovac’s side are the form team, so a Dortmund win looks a strong option for our main bet.

Bayer should put up a fight, however, and a hard-fought 2-1 win for BVB looks a reasonable correct score prediction. Leverkusen have only conceded more than twice in one of their last 10 games, and that was a 4-3 win, while Dortmund have conceded in 11 of their last 12 games so a shut-out for the away side looks unlikely.
