Tip Reasoning

  • Benfica have won eight of their 12 home league games this season, six with at least three goals in the game.
  • Vizela have lost four of their last seven away Primeira Liga fixtures, three with at least three goals in the game.
  • There have been three or more goals scored in each of Benfica’s last eight games.

Goals always the way to go with Benfica

Benfica can keep the pressure up on the top two by winning Friday’s Primeira Liga contest against troubled Vizela at Estadio da Luz. The visitors are now just three points above the drop zone following Monday’s 3-1 defeat at Santa Clara and this is going to be another big test for a defence that has been found wanting.

Not many teams in Portugal can live up to the high goal statistics of Benfica games, but Vizela are having a go at matching them – mainly through conceding many more than they were earlier in the campaign. Álvaro Pacheco’s men shipped just 16 goals in their first 11 top-flight games following promotion, but have been conceding at a rate of almost two per game since then.

Their best form of defence could be to attack Benfica, who have been inferior to the other members of the big three at the back this season. The Eagles have maintained only two clean sheets in their last 11 home league games.

Cassiano’s return could boost Vizela goal prospects

Vizela will hope the return of Brazilian striker Cassiano, Liga 2’s top scorer last season with 16 goals, from suspension can give them the firepower to frighten the hosts. The Braga-based outfit have scored in eight of their 12 Primeira away games, three quarters of which have gone over 2.5 goals in total.

Backing Nelson Verissimo’s side to win with at least three goals seems the way to go here given six of Benfica’s eight home wins have included at least that number – with a couple going way above and beyond that line. Taking Benfica with ‘unders’ is certainly not for the faint hearted, although we realise next week’s Champions League return against Ajax could influence whether Benfica take their foot off the gas in the latter stages of this.

A 3-1 scoreline is favoured in correct score betting as Vizela have conceded an average of 2.3 goals per game away from home since November without encountering a big three opponent. They did manage to score on both of their visits to Gil Vicente and Braga, two sides with defensive records on a par with Benfica’s.
