Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich Predictions

Though Dortmund’s pre-season has been far from perfect, they have put in some decent performances to show why they will be title contenders in the Bundesliga this season. Dortmund’s most notable match over the summer was a 4-1 win against Manchester United in the International Champions Cup, with some spectacular goals from Gonzalo Castro, Dembele and Aubameyang showing their quality. Since then, Dortmund have played three times, with draws against Manchester City and Sunderland followed by a 1-0 defeat against Athletic Bilbao in Austria last Tuesday.

Bayern Munich’s last pre-season club friendly was also a 1-0 defeat, though against Spanish giants Real Madrid. Many players have had time to rest in the ten days between that fixture and this German Supercup match against Borussia Dortmund. Carlo Ancelotti has already insisted that he is “in it to win it” on Sunday, though Bayern Munich will be without a few play core players heading into this match (see team news). Eyes will be on two players in particular, however, as ex-Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels and ex-Bayern Mario Gotze are likely to both feature against their former clubs here.

Despite Bayern Munich being the most successful German football club ever, Borussia Dortmund are actually the side with the most honours in the Supercup. They have won it five times overall and twice within the last three years. Both of their most recent Supercup wins (2013 and 2014) were against Bayern Munich, taking 4-2 and 2-0 wins away from the Allianz Arena. Dortmund have continued to be tricky opponents for Bayern over recent years, despite their comparable decline in the Bundesliga. Back-to-back 0-0 draws are the most recent results from the last two competitive meetings between the two sides and we expect “Der Klassiker” to remain tight and low-scoring for the meantime.

Though Bayern Munich are the bookies’ favourites, we feel there is decent value in backing Borussia Dortmund here. For starters, Dortmund have far fewer injury concerns than Bayern Munich heading into this match. They have also, arguably, made some of the best signings in the Bundesliga this summer, bringing in the likes of Andre Schurrle from Wolfsburg, Mario Gotze from Bayern and Marc Batra from Barcelona. Most importantly, however, is that Dortmund want and need this win more than Bayern Munich. If Dortmund can head into the 2016/2017 Bundesliga season seeing that immovable champions Bayern Munich are not “invincible” then they will have confidence they need to push themselves to be title contenders once again.

Hence, we expect Borussia Dortmund to fight harder here and see value in bets of Borussia Dortmund to win draw no bet at 6/5 and Borussia Dortmund to win 1-0 at 10/1 with bet365 in this match.
