Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hamburg Predictions

Defeats in a series of difficult fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, Freiburg, reigning champions Bayern Munich and, most recently, the in-form Hertha Berlin have left Hamburg standing rock bottom in the Bundesliga. Hamburg’s only point was taken from their opening 1-1 draw at home to FC Ingolstadt in the opening match of the season – morale must be at a low. Hamburg were expected to start off their campaign much stronger after a 10th placed finish last season and the signing of a handful of promising new players (see team news). Following Hamburg’s 1-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich, coach Bruno Labbadia was dismissed and quickly replaced with former Hoffenheim coach Markus Gisdol. His appointment didn’t have the explosive impact Hamburg would have hoped for, however, and his first game in charge saw Hamburg lose 2-0 away to Hertha BSC.

Borussia Monchengladbach, who had a similarly slow start in the Bundesliga last season, are having no such difficulty this time around under the guidance of Andre Schubert. Although M’gladbach are “under-performing” and off-pace for the top four finish they’ll be aiming for this season, the hosts thrive at home and will be confident to further extend their record here against the out of form Hamburg, despite the absence of Brazilian centre forward Raffeal.

Borussia M’gladbach are the bookies’ favourites here at 4/6 and although we feel that this is actually a decent price, we feel there is slightly better value to bet the hosts with a -1.0 Asian Handicap for the following reasons: Borussia M’gladbach come into this match off the back of TEN consecutive Bundesliga home wins and while Hamburg’s new coach Markus Gisdol has had some time to work with the team over the international break, we feel this simply won’t be enough for a side who’s morale and confidence are at an all time low. Looking over Gladbach’s recent results at Borussia Park, it’s also clear that they don’t sit back on a small lead – Borussia M’gladbach have scored three or more goals in six of their last ten matches. However, also notable is that they have conceded exactly one goal in four of their last five at home.

As such, Borussia M’gladbach -1.0 Asian Handicap at 2.150 and Borussia M’gladbach to win 3-1 at 11/1 with bet365 are our choice bets for this match.
