Burnley vs Aston Villa Predictions
- Burnley scored 49 goals in 23 Championship home games last season.
- Villa have hit nine goals across their last two games.
- Villa have played twice since Burnley’s last fixture.
Back to it for Burnley
Burnley entertain Aston Villa on Sunday in their first fixture since going down 3-0 at home to Manchester City in the opening round of fixtures.
The Clarets were due to head to Luton last weekend but the game was postponed due to work to improve Kenilworth Road, while Villa have played twice in the meantime.
The visitors went down 5-1 at Newcastle in the opening round of games but have bounced back with a 4-0 thrashing of Everton and a 5-0 demolition of Hibs in the first leg of their Europa Conference League qualifier.
Both teams capable of scoring
The promoted hosts have had two weeks to prepare for this clash and should be raring to go as they return to Premier League action after a tough opener against the champions.
In contrast, Villa have had a quick turnaround and boss Unai Emery played a strong starting XI at Hibs in midweek so they may arrive a little jaded. As such, the big price on a home win does hold some appeal here but instead I’m opting for both teams to score for our main tip.
Burnley may have drawn a blank against City but they were able to carve out a few chances and should enjoy a bit more success against Villa. Vincent Kompany’s men managed 49 goals in 23 Championship outings at Turf Moor last term so they should be good for a goal here.
Villa have hit nine goals across their last two games and have scored in all three of their fixtures, so goals at both ends looks likely.
First points for Clarets
Villa have clearly hit some form after overcoming both Everton and Hibs but they are winless in five on their travels in the league (D2, L3) going back to last season.
Burnley should still have some momentum after winning promotion last term and they will probably view this game as the start of their season in earnest after an incredibly tough opener and then a break.
As such, I’m backing the hosts to edge this tie and a 2-1 win for Burnley is the correct score prediction.
Villa’s Leon Bailey could be set for a big season and the Jamaican comes into this game in form after scoring in each of his last two appearances, so he looks a good contender to grab the visitors’ predicted goal.
