Tough to back Cagliari after awful season

Cagliari were obliterated 4-0 by reigning Serie A champions and league leaders Inter at the weekend, in a game where Walter Mazzarri’s team managed just 25% of the ball and two attempts on goal. They are now winless in nine, although they had managed four successive draws before their trip to San Siro, and have just one win all season, against fellow strugglers Sampdoria.

With the Sardinian outfit two points from safety ahead of a crucial league clash with Udinese next weekend, their attentions may very well lie elsewhere, when Serie B outfit Cittadella come to town for a Coppa Italia second round tie.

Cittadella sit seventh in the second tier after a decent start to the season, and have a habit of keeping games tight. They’ve conceded just 17 goals in 17 league matches, and only one of their eight away games, of which they’ve won four, has featured anything more than two goals.

Serie B side to keep goals tally down?

Cittadella have gone seven unbeaten since a 2-1 loss to Parma in October, keeping four clean sheets during that run. Only one of those seven games featured more than two goals, and with Cagliari having only netted once in each of their last four home matches, the second-tier side could make this a close contest.

Cagliari have only won one of Mazzarri’s 14 games in charge, averaging less than a goal per game under the former Watford boss, so backing Cittadella to keep the goals tally down to under 2.5 could be a smart play. With rotation possible for a home side which has bigger fish to fry, Cittadella to take the tie to extra time with a 1-1 draw could be worth a correct score punt.
