Charlton vs West Bromwich Albion Predictions

  • Charlton have won 1 of their last 15 games.
  • The Baggies have the fewest defeats in the league and the most away points so far.
  • The visitors have lost 1 of their last 6 trips to London.
  • Under 2.5 goals has landed in 10 of West Brom’s previous 11 trips.

Can WBA Survive Rough Spell?

It wasn’t a great Christmas period for West Brom, who struggled for victories in the last few weeks. However, the Baggies remain level with leaders Leeds, so it’s hardly much of a season to complain about. They even booked a place in the FA Cup Fourth Round last weekend, seeing off Charlton at the Valley.

West Brom are the visitors to the Valley once again this weekend. The pair clash again with league points up for grabs, with neither side in a position to let the points go here. The two sides need results for very different results, as the Addicks look to avoid the drop while West Brom try to get their promotion bid back on track.

Issues for Bowyer

Charlton’s 3-2 victory against Bristol City on Boxing Day ended a five-match winless run at the Valley in league competition (D2 L3). However, problems still remain for the hosts. Not only have they failed to win consecutive Championship home games since April 2016, but their campaign faces trouble from every angle.

Key forward Lyle Taylor is part of an 11-man injury list heading into this game, which has been a severe blow to their campaign. With a small budget to work with already, these injuries have hit hard. To make matters worse, there are tensions with Taylor behind the scenes, as the player is set to be sold this month after failing to extend his contract beyond the summer.

When you add the small matter of their run of one victory in 15 games, it’s easy to see why Charlton have things tough right now. They are winning their survival battle so far, but worries heighten by the week.

Baggies Can Bounce Back

The visitors have one win in six in the Championship, but their FA Cup win here was a bit of a relief. However, there’s little reason for them to be disappointed with this season. West Brom have only lost two of their 26 league games in 2019-20 – the lowest total in the Championship. The only other time that happened was the 1901/02 season when they were promoted as champions.

The Baggies have won 14 of 26 overall, while they’ve won eight times from 13 away trips – giving them the league’s best away record. Their record in the capital is great, as WBA have lost only once in their last six away league games in London, winning three times in the process (D2 L1). They meet a Charlton side who have lost three games on the spin, so West Brom are the obvious favourites.

We expect a low scoring win for the away side, who have seen under 2.5 goals in 10 of their last 11 away trips in the league. The same landed in last weekend’s 1-0 success here. They’ve seen under 3.5 goals in 92% of their away trips, while the same has landed in 65% of Charlton’s league games. The Baggies have scored once in five of their last six away, while they have the league’s best away defensive record – conceding nine times in 13 trips. That has us backing West Brom and under 3.5 goals, along with a 1-0 away win.
