Tip Reasoning

  • Crystal Palace claimed a 3-1 victory over Everton on Sunday
  • Southampton have lost 15 of their last 19 league trips
  • The Saints have conceded 73 goals in the current calendar year, only four sides in Premier League history have conceded more
  • All but one of the visitors’ away defeats have been by at least two goals

Eagles on a high

Sunday’s 3-1 win over Everton – inspired by Conor Gallagher – has Crystal Palace riding high coming into this midweek clash. The Eagles have had a great campaign under Patrick Viera, while their revamped squad has proved more adventurous than Selhurst Park has seen in recent years.

After such an impressive win morale is high and the Eagles are favourites to add to it with a victory. They claimed back-to-back victories last month when they followed up a win at City by beating Wolves. Can they do the same again?

Southampton struggling on the road

Southampton lost 3-0 at Arsenal on Saturday, continuing a dismal year for them. The Saints have lost 15 of their last 19 Premier League away games, while they’ve been beaten in five of their eight away trips this season.

Southampton have conceded a league-high 73 Premier League goals in 2021 – only four sides have ever conceded more in a single calendar year. However, injuries to their first and second choice goalkeepers leaves them short at the back, so expect that tally to rise this week.

Palace to boost home record

Crystal Palace have only lost one of their eight home Premier League games this season (W3 D4). Only Liverpool have lost fewer games at home this term, so the Saints’ away record isn’t likely to improve.

The visitors also have one of the worst attacking records in the league, having scored just 14 goals, despite their expected goals tally being 20.6. That’s the second-worst difference between xG and goals scored in the division.

Palace are coming into this one on a high and they should add to the visitors’ dire away record. Back Palace to claim a win, while a 2-0 victory is my correct score prediction given that the Saints have lost by two or more in all but one of their away defeats.

Crystal Palace predicted lineup: Guaita; Ward, Tomkins, Guehi, Mitchell; Gallagher, Kouyate, Schlupp; Ayew, Benteke, Zaha

Southampton predicted lineup: Caballero; Livramento, Salisu, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Elyounoussi, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Tella; Redmond, Walcott
