Southampton 1-0 @ 7/1

Reason For Crystal Palace vs Southampton Predictions

  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in five of the last six meetings between Palace and Southampton.
  • Crystal Palace failed to score in six of their final eight games last season.
  • The Eagles were beaten in seven of those eight matches.
  • Southampton had the Premier League’s third best away record in 2019/20.

Palace hoping for a change in fortunes

Crystal Palace closed out the 2019/20 in woefully abject form, losing seven and drawing one of their final eight games in a dismal sequence of performances and results that eventually saw the Eagles land at 14th spot.

With a fresh campaign on the horizon and a positive upturn required, Roy Hodgson’s preparations have been severely hampered by a slew of injuries to key players, with James Tomkins, Gary Cahill, Patrick van Aanholt, Mamadou Sakho and Christian Benteke all set to miss out this weekend, while new big-money signing Eberechi Eze is also rated as doubtful.

The Eagles, who were the second lowest scorers in the Premier League last term after bottom club Norwich City, failed to notch in six of their last eight matches in 2019/20, and having failed to add stardust to their forward line over the summer, another toothless campaign looks possible.

Southampton hoping for a quicker start

In stark contrast to the Eagles, Southampton finished the previous campaign in some style with a seven-match unbeaten surge that included a win against Man City at St. Mary’s Stadium and a draw with Man Utd at Old Trafford.

The Saints strong finish only helped to right the wrongs of a disastrous start to the 2019/20 season however, where Southampton’s run of just two wins from their opening 13 games put Ralph Hasenhüttl’s position under threat.

Southampton kept faith with their Austrian manager however, and their decision was fully vindicated by the end of the campaign. With the Saints’ easy on the eye football placing them on a positive trajectory, and 22-goal Danny Ings leading from the front, an improvement on their 11th place finish last season looks on this term.

Tight contest anticipated at Selhurst Park

Saturday’s clash between Crystal Palace and Southampton pits two tactically robust teams against each other at Selhurst Park, and results from recent head-to-heads between the sides suggests we should expect a low-scoring battle for inches in South London.

Under 2.5 goals rattled the net in five of the last six encounters between Palace and the Saints since 2017, including each of the clubs’ meetings last season, and we expect their latest tussle this weekend to be similarly cagey.

Incredibly, the Eagles managed to score just six goals in their final nine Premier League home assignments last term – in fact, Palace’s total haul of just 15 goals in 19 games on their own patch made them the division’s lowest scoring home team for the entire season.

Whatever lens you view it through, Palace’s meeting with Southampton on Saturday has all the hallmarks of low-scoring affair, making the under 2.5 goals market an outstanding choice again.

Our correct score prediction backs the Saints to eventually eke out an opening day 1-0 victory at their host’s expense however. Despite their relatively modest 11th place finish last season, Southampton ended the campaign with the Premier League’s third best away record after Liverpool and Man City.

Having bested Palace and kept a clean sheet at Selhurst Park on their last trip there in January this year, Southampton should have confidence to go with their ability to produce the goods on the road.

Throw in Roy Hodgson’s major injury issues and the landscape for a Southampton win looks increasingly favourable, making a narrow 1-0 triumph against a Palace team that conceded just 1.05 times per 90 minutes at home in 2019/20 an outcome worth backing.
