Tip Reasoning

AC Milan make the trip to Empoli this week, but can the Rossoneri claim a much needed win? Their last two matches in the league have been poor, and they make this trip knowing that Empoli recorded a huge result the last time these two sides met. Of course, there’s always going to be a little bit of fear for Gennaro Gattuso when he takes Milan to a promoted side. After all, they embarrassingly drew 2-2 with Benevento last term, and they were hammered by Hellas Verona too. Can they have better luck on the road to the Serie A newcomers?

Empoli haven’t made the greatest start in the league, and it looks like this is going to be another campaign fighting against the drop for them. They have four points from five, and they’re narrowly above the bottom three. They go in to the midweek round hoping for a major shock, like the one which they pulled off in the last meeting between these two sides. During the 2016/17 campaign, Empoli managed to get a 2-1 win in Milan over the Rossoneri, and that impressive win did boost their chances of staying up.

Milan have made plenty of changes since then, having had three different owners between that meeting and this. They’re currently pushing for a return to the top four, as Elliot – the hedge fund who now owns Milan – look to get the club back to their best before selling on at a big profit. However, they have to win a tough race to make the top four before that, and right now they sit 12th. Their last two games have brought draws with Atalanta and Cagliari, so can we have much faith in the Rossoneri to get a result here?

We should certainly get a high scoring encounter, with Empoli reinventing themselves as a more attacking side while in Serie B last term. In addition, the last seven meetings between Empoli and AC Milan have seen both teams scoring goals. That record is likely to continue, especially with both teams scoring in Milan’s last six away league games. We’re backing Empoli to score a goal against a Milan side who have struggled at the back so far. Both teams to score is our tip, while we see the visitors getting a 2-1 win.

Milan’s Gonzalo Higuain has netted three goals in his last three Serie A appearances against Empoli. He’s also struck in three straight matches for his new club, and that form should carry in to this clash. We’re also backing Higuain to score any time on Thursday, given that he finally has hit form for Gattuso.
