Gillingham vs Peterborough Predictions

Gillingham play host to Peterborough on Saturday afternoon, as they go in search of a first win in three. Peterborough on the other hand will be looking to make it five games without tasting defeat.

Steve Evans was appointed by Gillingham in the summer to turn the club from also rans into top-half, play-off contenders, though he’s so far falling short of expectations. It’s not that the Gills have done terribly, but they’re not much better off than before. The fact that they’re six points from the top six but only four from the drop-zone says it all.

Poor away form is the main reason as to why Gillingham aren’t in a more flattering league position. Fortunately for Evans’ men, this fixture is at home, though facing Peterborough, home or away, isn’t easy, as many teams have found out recently.

On their own patch, the Gills have performed well of late. They’ve won three of their last four at Priestfield, and even when they lost by a goal to nil against Ipswich, they held their own and were just about the better team. Posh are a goal-scoring side, so it bodes well for the hosts that they’ve been thriving in the final third at home of late, scoring ten in their last four, averaging 2.01 expected goals for.

Peterborough have been in fine form of late, winning two of their last three in the league, as well as six of their last nine, only one of which they’ve lost. Moreover, Posh have shown that they can do the business away from the comforts of home, as they come into this with the fifth-best away record in the division.

Saturday’s visitors have lost just one of their last five on the road, though they’ve not won any of the last three. From an attacking point of view, there’s been little wrong with the travelling efforts of Darren Ferguson’s men, who’ve notched 11 goals in five, averaging a respectable 1.41 expected goals for. At the other end of the pitch, things haven’t gone as well in recent weeks, as Posh have conceded at least twice in each of their last three away matches, shipping a total of seven goals.

In the betting, the hosts are very easy to fancy at the current prices. Both ‘Gillingham to Win’ and ‘Gillingham to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ look worth a punt. For all they’re not in a great league position, the recent home efforts of Steve Evans’ men have been very good, especially from an attacking point of view. Against a Posh side that has conceded plenty of goals and generally given lots away on the road of late, the Gills look to have a better chance of both winning and scoring twice than the early market would suggest.
