FC Bayern Munich and coach Pep Guardiola are potentially only one game away from wrapping the 2015/16 Bundesliga title. Bayern Munich have been in relentless form, unbeaten in ten matches (W8 D2), and back to back wins in the last week with last Saturday’s 3-0 win over European aspirants FC Schalke 04 followed by a 2-0 victory over SV Werder Bremen in the DFB Cup semi-final on Tuesday evening. Bayern Munich won’t find much time to rest in the coming weeks with further mid-week fixtures against Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League over the next two weeks. Bayern Munich could wrap up a record fourth consecutive Bundesliga title if they win at Berlin this Saturday while Borussia Dortmund lose to VfB Stuttgart. Munich also are strong favourites to take the treble this season – something they last achieved in the 2012/13 season.
Hertha Berlin’s attempt to return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 1999/2000 season has taken a huge blow in recent weeks. Hertha stood third-place in the Bundesliga for 13 weeks before Bayer Leverkusen finally overtook them last weekend, winning five consecutive games as Berlin took only one point from their last three. Their 2-1 defeat last Saturday at strugglers TSG Hoffenheim means they trail Bayer Leverkusen by two points, but still have a four point cushion above fifth place, and their 3-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund last Wednesday has wiped away their best chance for silverware in many years.
All the factors favour Bayern Munich going into this match. Bayern Munich are obviously the stronger side on paper and overwhelming favourites with the motivation of potentially sealing their names on a fourth Bundesliga title in a row – interestingly two of their last four title wins were sealed in Berlin (in 2010 and 2014). Hertha Berlin are in poor current form and while clinical in front of goal, they have had the fewest shots on goal this season with 285. Bayern, naturally, have had the most – over twice as many – with 580 shot on goal this season. Bayern Munich have kept clean sheets in four from their last five league wins and the extra motivation is there for Manuel Neuer to continue this trend as he currently has 19 clean sheets from 30 Bundesliga games. A 20th clean sheet would be a new Bundesliga best for him, beating his own record from last season. Considering the above analysis with the statistics below, we expect Bayern’s strength and motivation to be too much for a deflated Hertha Berlin, despite their solid home form. Bayern Munich to win to nil with a final score of Bayern Munich 2-0 at 13/2 seem like top value bets for this match.
