Tip Reasoning

  • There have been fewer than three goals in eight of the last 11 Hull City league games.
  • There have been fewer than three goals in Stoke’s last four away Championship fixtures.
  • Both teams’ average fewer than 2.5 goals per game this season (Stoke 2.21, Hull 2.04).

Potters’ problems are up front

Goals are likely to be on short supply when Stoke City attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive at Hull City on Sunday.

The Potters have scored just four goals in their last six games during a sequence of one win and four defeats that has seen Michael O’Neill’s side drop from sixth to eighth. Joint-leading scorer Jacob Brown has been axed from the starting line-up and although, Tyrese Campbell has shown promise, the replacement hasn’t delivered enough goals.

Stoke’s midfielders or defenders aren’t stepping up to contribute in the goalscoring stakes with the Potters’ production dropping from 1.4 goals per game to 1.17 since playmaker Nick Powell joined the injury list in October.

Stats align to an ‘unders’ bet

Hull City’s defensive record is much better than any of their other bottom six clubs – bar Derby County. The Tigers have conceded seven times in their last seven home games and it’s their dismal strikeforce that appears to have been holding them in a relegation fight.

This figures to be a low-scoring contest where whichever team grabs the lead stands an excellent chance of taking all three points. Hull have scored the opener on their last three home games and were only denied a third straight win by Matty James’ stoppage-time leveller for Bristol City last time out.

Although we feel the hosts could nick this if they can get on the board first, an ‘unders’ bet appeals more because these two sides are trending downwards in terms of goals. There have been fewer than three goals in eight of the last 11 Hull City league games and in all of Stoke’s last four away Championship fixtures. A 1-1 scoreline takes the eye in correct score betting because, despite their issues, Stoke have only failed to score in one of their last eight away games.
