Portugal vs Uzbekistan Predictions

Portugal in need of a response

Portugal came into the World Cup as one of the favourites but they were held to a 1-1 by DR Congo in their opener and need to respond against Group K outsiders Uzbekistan on Tuesday.

Roberto Martinez’s side were outplayed for large periods by DR Congo but they should have an easier time of it against the White Wolves, who were well beaten in a 3-1 defeat to Colombia in their own curtain raiser.

Portugal are capable of far better than they showed against DR Congo and backing the Europeans to win to nil is the pick. The Selecao das Quinas are on a six-game unbeaten run, with four wins, and should have far too much for this limited Uzbekistan side.

The Uzbeks have scored in each of their last two games, both defeats, but they only managed three shots on goal in total across those fixtures. Prior to that, Uzbekistan failed to score in games against Venezuela (draw, won on penalties) and Canada.

Portugal should win but they may have to settle for a modest 2-0 win against Uzbekistan, who have shown some resilience in defence against higher ranked opposition. Italian coach Fabio Cannavaro has made his side tough to break down and Uzbekistan haven’t lost by more than two goals since 2023, so they can keep things on the right side of respectable against the Portuguese.

Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet game against DR Congo but still managed three shots and Portugal’s record scorer looks the standout bet for an anytime effort.
