Cape Verde could be heroes again

Cape Verde held 1-20 Spain to a 0-0 draw in their opening group-stage contest to cause the biggest shock so far in the 2026 World Cup. 

Of course, the Blue Sharks rode their luck and 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha played a blinder to keep Spain out, but it was a discipline and a spirited display from Bubista’s men. 

Spain did hit 27 efforts on goal and create an expected goals figure of 2.10 in Atlanta, but those are not sky high numbers from the pre-tournament favourites and Cape Verde played well to collect the biggest point in their history. 

Uruguay have questions to answer

Uruguay were poor in the first half of their 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia, but the Sky Blues were far more like a team you would expect Marcelo Bielsa to send out in the second period. 

However, it’s been a pretty unsettled tenure for Bielsa, there are defensive injury concerns from Uruguay and Darwin Nunez fails to convince at the head of the Sky Blue attack. 

Cape Verde’s approach will be much the same as their 0-0 draw with Spain and the Blue Sharks now have the belief of being able to upset the odds on the World Cup stage.
