Hungary vs Estonia Predictions
Can Hungary put another three points on the board in the Nations League on Thursday night? They meet Estonia, with the pair in a fight for survival. They are the bottom two sides in Group C2, with Estonia propping up the other four sides with just a point to their name. The visitors could be sent packing to the bottom tier if they lose this trip, so can the Hungarians secure their place in the third tier of this competition with three points this week?
The hosts have the chance to move into second with a win, as long as Greece can’t beat leaders Finland. However, Hungary may be looking back over this competition as a real missed opportunity. They were among the sides who benefited from an expanded Euros back in 2016, and winning this group was their best way to make it into the tournament in two years’ time. They now have no chance of securing a play-off spot, and have to make the top two in their qualifying group, which is a tall order.
Estonia are set to drop down to the bottom tier of the Nations League, unless they can arrest some pretty shoddy form. They make this trip knowing that avoiding defeat is key, while they won’t want to take too many risks going forward. They have been off the pace in almost every match so far, and it looks like they’re going to be falling into the lowest division in UEFA’s new competition. They may end up being more at home in the basement tier, having found results too hard to come by so far.
The visitors are desperate to turn things around, but they have a pretty shoddy record on their travels of late. They make this trip without a win in their last six matches, with their last victory on the road coming at Vanuatu a year ago. In their last four trips they’ve failed to find the net, while they’ve failed to score in three of their four matches in the Nations League this term.
Hungary don’t have a stellar record overall, but they did win 2-1 against Greece in their last home game. Their previous home victories were by much narrower margins, after 1-0 victories over the Faroe Islands and Costa Rica. We expect another narrow clash here, given the visitors desperation and their lack of goals on the road. As a result, we’re going with under 2.5 goals as the main bet, and a 1-0 victory for the hosts.
