IFK Goteborg vs Sirius Predictions
Two of last seasons mid table Allsvenskan sides go head to head in the league on Friday evening, as IFK Goteborg host Sirius. With sixteen games of the current season already behind us, both Goteborg and Sirius will be disappointed with what they have achieved. Both sides sit in the bottom half of the table with Sirius just a point above the relegation places and Goteborg just five points and two places better off.
The hosts finished the last campaign in tenth place, so perhaps they are maintaining the standards set last season, but the majority of teams the size and stature of Goteborg would be disappointed if they don’t improve on a previous seasons poor showing.
Goteborg’s inconsistent form of recent weeks perhaps shows us why they do linger in the bottom half of the Allsvenskan table, with the eighteen times league champions winning three and losing three of their last six matches. The best a victory is likely to bring this weekend is a move up one place in the table, and that is only if Örebro fail to win their game.
Colombian-born Swedish defender David Boo Wiklander captains the hosts this season, while 36-year old forward Tobias Hysén is the clubs vice-captain and their leading assist provider this season. Iceland’s Ómarsson top scores for Goteborg in the league this season with eight goals to his name so far, with the next highest scorer, Kharaishvili of Georgia, on three Allsvenskan goals.
Sirius finished last season three places above Goteborg, but as things stand they trail Friday’s hosts by five points. A victory this weekend could see Sirius move up one place in the table and reduce the gap between themselves and Goteborg to just two points, something the form guide suggests is a possibility.
The visitors have won their last three league games on the run, picking up four wins and two defeats in their last six games, which makes the visitors the form favourites ahead of kick-off. Sirius had been out of the top flight of Swedish football for 42-years before they returned to the Allsvenskan division in 2016 and will be hoping to avoid second season syndrome this time around.
Sirius are yet to find an out and out goalscorer within their squad this season, instead relying upon the likes of Arvidsson, Haglund, and Ogbu to chip in a few goals each from different areas of the pitch. At the other end of the pitch, the visitors have only kept one clean sheet in their last six attempts, but have only failed to score in one of those games as well and thanks to their fine scoring form, Sirius have been picking up points more than dropping them of late.
We’re confident that both teams will score on Friday and that over 2.5 goals will be produced in the process. Three of the last five meetings between these two clubs have seen both teams score, while over 2.5 goals have been scored in four of the last five encounters between these two clubs. Both teams have scored and over 2.5 goals have been produced in four of each teams last six matches, and we’re backing this game to end in a 2-2 draw.
