Nothing sour about Liverpool’s record against the Cherries

Liverpool suffered a shock home defeat to Nottingham Forest in their last Premier League fixture, but they bounced back from that setback with a convincing 3-1 victory away to AC Milan in their Champions League opener on Tuesday night.

Next up for Arne Slot and his side is a home clash with a Bournemouth team they have enjoyed facing in recent times, as they have won 10 of the last 11 encounters across all competitions.

That run includes five-successive home victories over the Cherries – most notably their 9-0 demolition in August 2022 – a result that contributed to then Bournemouth boss Scott Parker losing his job.

Bournemouth certainly do not thrive on their visits to Anfield – they have never won at the venue – and they head into this game having triumphed just once in five matches across league and cup this season.

Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth side will face threats from all angles on Saturday, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz expected to lead Liverpool’s attacking line, but one slightly more obscure anytime goalscorer option could be Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk .

Van Dijk opened his account for the season against Milan, showcasing his aerial threat from set-pieces when powering home a Kostas Tsimikas corner.

The Dutch international will hope to do something similar against the Cherries and he has previous, having got on the scoresheet in that infamous 9-0 win for Liverpool when the sides met at Anfield two seasons ago.
