Reason For Liverpool vs Leeds Predictions

  • Liverpool won 18 of their 19 Premier League home games last season.
  • Leeds scored in 87% of their Championship matches last term.
  • Liverpool scored three or more goals in nine separate home fixtures in 2019/20.
  • Liverpool haven’t lost a Premier League home fixture since April 2017 (59 games).

Leeds back in the big time

Leeds are gearing up to contest their first Premier League fixture in 16 years this weekend following their long-awaited promotion from the second tier, though a trip to take on defending champions Liverpool at Anfield represents just about the toughest test of their top flight mettle.

With the eccentric genius of manager Marcelo Bielsa key, Leeds romped home to the Championship title in 2019/20, gathering 93 points in total to finish well clear of West Brom in second place.

Bielsa’s unique tactical blueprint allowed Leeds to average around 65% possession in their league matches last term, and their ability to dominate and rotate the ball should serve them well a level up the pyramid this season.

After a successful summer recruitment drive that saw Leeds capture Spanish international Rodrigo from Valencia and German international Robin Koch from Freiburg alongside the permanent acquisition of Helder Costa from Wolves, the Whites look well-equipped for a productive first season back in the big time.

Liverpool start as champions for the first time

Liverpool are preparing to start a Premier League campaign as champions for the first time in 2020/21, after their relentless consistency saw them lift their first title with relative comfort last term.

With a well-balanced squad already at his disposal, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp resisted the urge to spend over the summer with back-up fullback Konstantinos Tsimikas the club’s only notable signing.

The German hinted that a new formation and a switch from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 could be on the cards this season however, though Klopp could choose to deploy Liverpool in their tried and tested shape for their campaign opener on Merseyside to ensure his team start on the front foot.

Liverpool’s firepower difficult to contain

Liverpool were ferociously consistent at fortress Anfield last season en-route to lifting the title, winning an incredible 18 out of 19 Premier League home assignments on Merseyside overall.

Remarkably, the Reds haven’t lost a league game on their own turf since April 2017, and if they avoid defeat against Leeds, Liverpool will have reached the 60-Premier League match mark at Anfield without a single loss.

Liverpool will be keen to make a statement performance in their first runout as champions on Saturday, and with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah all looking sharp following a decent fitness-building pre-season fixture programme, the Reds should win against newly promoted Leeds on Saturday.

Having finished the previous campaign with just one clean sheet in seven matches, Liverpool showed a slight defensive vulnerability that Leeds could exploit to notch a consolation however.

Bielsa’s charges found the net in 87% of their Championship fixtures last term, and their slick-passing football should allow them to create a chance or two against an attack-minded Liverpool team that will leave spaces to counter into.

With that considered, the Liverpool win and both teams to score combination looks excellent value for Saturday’s opening tussle, while our correct score prediction points towards a 3-1 home triumph.

Liverpool plundered three or more goals in nine separate Premier League fixtures at Anfield last season, hitting the net an average of 2.73 times per 90 minutes overall across their home campaign. With a full complement of superstars available to them, the Merseysiders are capable of hitting another trio of goals against Leeds.
