Portugal -1

Reason for tip

Luxembourg have lost only two home games by more than a two-goal margin in the last five years and have an in-form keeper to ensure this stays relatively close. But Portugal have won their last six matches against Luxembourg, covering a -1 handicap on each occasion.

Portugal 3-1

Reason for tip

Portugal are as good as anyone in international football going forward, but can still be vulnerable at the back. Luxembourg scored against them when they met in World Cup qualifying two years ago and can do so again. That game finished 3-1 to Portugal and a repeat is fancied here.

Goncalo Ramos To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Goncalo Ramos has scored 14 goals in his last 12 starts for Portugal or Portugal’s Under-21 side. The Benfica striker should be fresh after coming off the bench on Thursday and is in good form for his club side.

Luxembourg vs Portugal Predictions

  • Luxembourg have lost only two home games by more than a two-goal margin in the last five years.
  • Portugal have won their last six matches against Luxembourg, covering a -1 handicap on each occasion.
  • Goncalo Ramos has scored 14 goals in his last 12 starts for Portugal or Portugal’s Under-21 side.

Portugal can maintain perfect start

Portugal can maintain their perfect start to Euro 2024 qualifying by picking up three further points in Luxembourg on Sunday with Goncalo Ramos to the fore.

The Benfica striker will probably be inserted into Roberto Martinez’s starting XI after only coming off the bench in the final 15 minutes of Portugal’s 4-0 home win over Liechtenstein on Thursday. Ramos, who has scored six goals in his last seven games for his club side, has bagged 14 goals in his last 12 starts for Portugal’s senior or Under-21 sides and should add to his international tally on Sunday.

Luxembourg opened their qualification program with a decent 0-0 draw in Trnava against a solid Slovakian unit. There were not many clear-cut chances in the game and on the three occasions that keeper Anthony Moris was called upon, he proved capable and reliable.

Red Lions’ keeper is in good form

The Union Saint-Gilloise custodian is having a good campaign and can now boast of three clean sheets in his last four international appearances. He will be a formidable opponent for a free-scoring Portugal side that do not lack creativity or sharpness in the box.

A Selecao have so much depth that Martinez can freshen up his line-up and see no drop in quality and that could make the difference in a game where Portugal will look to start fast and dominate their hosts.

Portugal have covered a -1 handicap in their last six meetings with the Red Lions and should do so again here, but it may be best not to get too greedy with the handicaps as Luxembourg rarely lose by more than a two-goal margin, hence the 3-1 correct score prediction.
